CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team pushed across 33 runs on Saturday afternoon to complete the three-game sweep of the Butler Bulldogs at Les Miller Field.
In game one, the Flames (10-17, 6-3 Horizon League) outslugged the Bulldogs (8-20, 1-8 Horizon League) to the tune of 21-11. The offense didn't let up in the nightcap either, as UIC emerged with a 12-4 win to send the fans home happy.
The attack was paced by Chris Rutta and Matt Serna. Rutta homered three times on Saturday, while Serna went yard twice for his first two collegiate home runs.
Each player had a total of seven RBI in the two contests.
GAME 1 - UIC 21, Butler 11
The Flames scored 10 times in the fifth inning, all with two outs to retake the lead for good en route to a 21-11 win over Butler.
The highlight of that frame came when newcomer Matt Serna belted his first career home run with the bases loaded to give UIC a 13-5 advantage.
Serna added another long ball in the eighth inning. He finished the game 4-for-6 with two homers, four runs scored and a game-high six RBI.
Chris Rutta went deep twice in the game, Steve McGuiggan homered and Andy Leonard added his first round-tripper of the season.
Ryan Meehan also added two RBI with a double that scored Serna and John Rosinski and started the 10-run outburst in fifth.
Catcher Michael Letzter homered twice in the loss for Butler.
Brad Riegler pitched 5.1 IP in relief and picked up his first win of the season.
GAME 2 - UIC 12, Butler 4
UIC jumped out of the gate early and hung seven runs on Butler starter Jared Wagoner in game two on its way to an easy 12-4 win.
The Flames got five doubles in the opening frame including three straight off the bats of Rutta, Nathan Orf and Serna.
Seven runs was more than enough insurance for the UIC pitching staff that found itself in rhythm early on in the day.
Rutta and Orf both had three hits in the second affair.
Freshman Joe Betcher was 2-for-5 and he tied Rutta with a game-high three RBI.
Michael Heesch picked up his second win in as many days for the Flames. The southpaw fired 6.1 IP of relief and allowed only one run on four hits while striking out a pair.
UIC will be back at Les Miller Field on Tuesday evening as they welcome the Western Michigan Broncos at 7:05 p.m.
