FAIRBORN, Ohio - The UIC baseball team surrendered 28 runs on Saturday as it was swept in a doubleheader at Wright State on Saturday.
UIC fell to 12-20 overall and 7-5 in Horizon League games, while Wright State moved to 15-14 and 6-3 in league play.
Game 2 - Wright State 14, UIC 10
The nightcap was a back-and-forth offensive affair that featured a combined 24 runs and 26 hits.
The Flames jumped on the Raiders early, pushing across four runs in the opening inning. Steve McGuiggan began the frame with a leadoff double down the right field line. Jason Ganek walked and both he and McGuiggan moved up 90 feet on Chris Rutta's groundout. Nathan Orf came to the dish and cleared the bases with an RBI double to give UIC an early lead.
Orf scored on Matt Serna's two-bagger and Serna touched home when Ryan Meehan hit the fourth double of the inning for the Flames.
Wright State crawled back with three runs in the third off of UIC starter Rafael Garcia, who allowed eight runs on nine hits over 4.1 IP.
The Flames added another tally in the fourth when Ryan Boss blasted his first collegiate home run over the left field wall.
The Raiders rallied for six runs in the fifth to grab their first lead of the game. Ryan Ashe belted a three-run homer for the inning's big blow.
Mike Dee's UIC squad would not go away quietly, however. In their half of the eighth, the Flames were able to scratch out five runs. Boss got things started when he drove in Andy Leonard and Serna with a base hit. Boss advanced to second on a fielding error and he scored, along with Meehan, when Ty Rubio doubled to left.
Chris Rutta plated the inning's final run with a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Rubio home to give the visitors a 10-9 advantage.
A single tally in the sixth and a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings gave Wright State the lead for good.
Game 1 - Wright State 14, UIC 3
Wright State pushed across four runs in the second inning and five more in the third to take a commanding 9-0 lead in the first game of Saturday's twin-bill.
Freshman Tim Suminski started the game for the Flames, but lasted only 1.2 IP after giving up four earned runs on five hits.
Suminski was relieved by senior Brad Riegler who also struggled, allowing five runs on four hits and a pair of walks.
Nathan Orf and Steve McGuiggan provided the lone offensive highlights of the game. Orf doubled to right center to lead off the fourth frame and he came around to score when Matt Serna followed with a single up the middle.
McGuiggan hit a home run to left centerfield with one away in the fifth to provide UIC's final tally of the opening contest. It was the Burnsville, Minn. native's fifth long ball of the season, which ranks second on the team.
Next up for UIC is a tilt with the Northern Illinois Huskies on Tuesday evening at 6:05 p.m. That game will be played at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, Ill., home of the Kane County Cougars. The team returns to Les Miller Field next Saturday when Wright State comes to Chicago for doubleheader at 12:05 p.m.
