NILES, Ohio - The UIC baseball team split a doubleheader with Horizon League foe Youngstown State on Saturday, winning the opener 9-7 before falling in the wild finale, 14-13.

The Flames moved to 7-16 overall on the season and 3-3 in Horizon League play.

GAME 1: UIC 9, Youngstown State 7 - The Flames rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to come from behind and knock off the Penguins, 9-7, in the first game of the doubleheader.

With one out in the ninth, UIC's John Rosinski hit a ball toward Youngstown State's Tom Clayton in right field. Just before the ball got to Clayton he slipped and fell, allowing Rosinski to motor into third base with a triple.

Andy Leonard came up next for the Flames, and with the infield drawn in, he hit a ball up the middle that allowed Rosinski to score.

UIC's next three runs came courtesy of the long ball. First, freshman first baseman Joe Betcher belted a two-run homer to left centerfield. Then the next batter, catcher Ryan Meehan, hit a solo shot to left field to increase the Flames lead to three, 9-6.

UIC was held scoreless in the game until the seventh inning when they exploded for five runs with the big blow coming in the form of a pinch-hit grand slam off the bat of senior slugger Chris Rutta. For Rutta, it was the sixth home run of the season.

Freshman Tim Suminski pitched two innings of relief to pick up the second win of his rookie campaign. The Milwaukee, Wis. native allowed only one run in two innings of work.

Lefty Michael Heesch started the game for the Flames. He allowed five runs in 4.1 IP, though only two runs were earned.

Another southpaw, Eric Wyman, chipped in with two scoreless innings of relief.

GAME 2: Youngstown State 14, UIC 13 - Each team posted a seven-run inning in the nightcap, but in the end it was Youngstown State who won the finale of the three game set, 14-13.

The contest featured 35 combined hits, 20 by the Penguins and 15 by UIC. The Penguins opened up an 8-2 lead after four innings, but as usual the Flames would not go away quietly.

Mike Dee's squad scored seven times in the sixth and three more in the seventh to recapture the lead, 12-11.

UIC added one in the eighth, but the Youngstown State did them two better and touched the dish three times to grab the one-run lead.

Seven different UIC players knocked in at least one run in the ballgame, while Jason Ganek drove in four and Meehan notched two RBI.

Matt Serna was 3-for-5 with an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored for the Flames.
