EVANSTON, Ill. - The UIC women's tennis team completed the Wildcat Invitational Sunday. Due to rain, the squad split competition between the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center in Winnetka, Ill., and the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. The Flames compiled a 10-12 record in singles play and 6-6 record in doubles competition.
Mariya Kovaleva (Almaty, Kazakastan/School #55) defeated Markovic of Wisconsin in Flight A in a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 decision. In the same flight, Elisa Simonetti (La Spezia, Italy/Schiller) dropped Michigan State's Amy Barton, 6-3, 7-6 (4). Kovaleva and Simonetti both posted a 1-2 singles record on the weekend.
In Flight B, Polina Guimaraes (Granger, Ind./Granger Christian) dropped Sarah Loebel of Wisconsin, 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 and was 1-2 in the tournament.
Jana Knoppe (Ihringen, Germany/Martin Schongauer Gymnasium) posted a 2-1 record, defeating Morven McColloch of Iowa, 6-3, 7-6 (2) and Western Michigan's Jill Pastunink in a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 outcome. Teona Tsertsvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/Tbilisi High School No. 183) defeated Harazin of Iowa, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and blanked Lauren Gruber of Wisconsin in the first set, before finishing the match in a 6-4 outcome. Tsertsvadze also compiled a 2-1 record in Flight C.
In the final singles flight Kathryn Sharples (Stewkley, England/St. Pauls) dropped Michigan State's Hilary Hager, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 and earned a 1-2 record in singles play. Haley Craig (Olathe, Kan./South Olathe) dropped to Julia Jamieson of Illinois in her first match, 7-6 (4), 6-4, before rebounding to win back-to-back matches. She first handled Jennifer Yen of Michigan State, 6-1, 6-0, followed by consecutive 6-0 sets over Hilary Hager of Michigan State for a 2-1 record.
Moving into doubles action, Kovaleva and Craig defeated Jill Pastunink and Maria Nivia of Western Michigan in an 8-5 outcome and Alaina Trgovick and Hannah Berner of Wisconsin, 8-4. The tandem recorded a 2-1 record. Teona and Guimaraes defeated Aleksandra Markovich and Sarah Loebel of Wisconsin in their opening doubles match in an 8-4 decision. The duo went 1-2 in weekend play.
Simonetti and Hricistova defeated Rebeca Mitrea and Cali Gustafson of DePaul in the opening doubles match, 8-6, before dropping Katarina Lingl and Julianne Gruber (Michigan State), 8-4. Sharples and Knoppe compiled a 1-2 doubles record as the tandem defeated Emilie Renault and Aria Lambert of Minnesota, 8-5 to open doubles play.
The Flames return to action and play host to the UIC Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Flames Tennis Courts in Chicago, Ill.
