CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's swimming & diving teams head north to Evanston, Ill., on Saturday, where they compete in a morning meet against the Northwestern Wildcats and North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Competition begins at 11 a.m. (CT) at the Norris Aquatics Center.
The Flames head into the weekend after falling to Milwaukee and Illinois on Saturday (Nov. 5). Despite the outcome, UIC looks to improve on the collaborative effort that was made from the men and women.
The men's team (2-1, 1-1 Horizon League) have put up performances they can build off of as they look toward the Wildcats and Fighting Sioux. Gabe Cury (50 free), Joel Demuth (100 free), Zach Van Swol (200 back) and Will Ikeda (200 breast) reached personal bests for the Flames against Milwaukee. Van Swol has achieved first-place finishes in all individual events he has competed in this season. Ikeda, Cury and Daniel Corley have also produced first- and second- place finishes in their individual events.
Marissa Yontz, Melanie Waszak and Clair Martin lead the women's squad (2-2, 1-1 Horizon League) into competition against Northwestern and North Dakota. The trio garnered close second-place finishes in their events versus Milwaukee and Illinois. Additionally, top times were placed by Yontz (50 free), Waszak (200 Free), Sara Pardue (1000 Free), Martin (200 back) and Andrea Longlade (200 breast).
Going into Saturday's competition, Northwestern's men's and women's squads are 1-1 on the season, with a meet against Wisconsin scheduled for Friday evening. The Fighting Sioux are off to an impressive start, with the men and women holding records of 3-1 and 4-1, respectively.
While facing off over the past four seasons, the Flames have failed to tally a victory against the Wildcats, while the men's squad is 4-0, with the women 1-3, against North Dakota.
