CHICAGO - The UIC men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded competition at the University of Chicago's Phoenix Fall Classic and Northwestern's TYR Invitational on Sunday. The men's squad took eighth place at the Myers-McLoraine Pool with 123 points and the women grabbed sixth place with 279 points. In Evanston, Ill., the men finished fifth with 329 points, while the women placed seventh with 207 points.

"Overall, we were pleased with how we competed over the weekend," head coach Paul Moniak said. "The goal was to race well in a three-day, prelim-final format and, for the most part, we achieved that goal. Now, it's time to get back to work and prepare for the second half of the season."

UIC faced fierce competition at the Phoenix Fall Classic, but the men's and women's squads were led by the likes of Luke Holbrook, George Kelly, Alisa Penkala, Sarah Harper and Sara Pardue.

Holbrook and Kelly competed alongside each other in the B final of the 100 breast, producing times of 1:01.01 and 1:02.78, respectively. Additionally, they were both placed in the B final of the 200 breast, with Holbrook coming in at 2:17.26 and Kelly at 2:19.01.

Penkala was part of the A final in the 100 breast, where she placed fifth with a time of 1:07.55. Competing in the A final again, she completed the 400 IM in 4:50.61 to take seventh place. Penkala's last performance of the weekend was a dominating one, placing second in the A final of the 200 breast in 2:25.86.

Harper participated in the B final of the 200 IM, finishing in 2:14.80, while also competing in the A final of the 100 fly, where she held a time of 1:01.48.

Pardue was placed in the A final of the 500 free and took sixth place in 5:18.19. Additionally, she was the lone competitor for UIC in the B final of the 200 free, where she finished in 2:02.30.

The Flames were able to put up qualifying times in the preliminaries to reach the next round of finals while facing tough competition at the TYR Invitational. Top performances came collectively from the men's and women's squads, represented by Daniel Corley, Gabe Cury, Will Ikeda, Monica Pinkus and Andrea Longlade.

In the 200 free, Corley placed fifth in the championship final with 1:40.51, recording a top time for the season. He held the best time (4:38.36) in the bonus final of the 500 free, while also taking first in the consolation final of the 100 free in 45.98, another season best.

Cury placed sixth in the championship final of the 50 fly with a time of 22.70, competed in the consolation finals of the 50 free and 100 fly, with a team top time of 51.16, and in the bonus final of the 100 free.

Ikeda swam in the championship finals of the 100 breast in 1:00.38, placing eighth, and the 200 breast in 2:08.48, finishing sixth.

A season's best was captured by Corley, Joel Demuth, Vince Errichiello and Cury in 1:24.05 in the 200 free relay.

Pinkus held the top performance of the weekend for UIC by taking third in the in the championship final of the 100 breast, finishing at a season-best 1:03.43 and setting a school record, while also competing in the consolation final of the 50 breast.

Longlade produced in the consolation final of the 50 breast and 100 breast, taking second best with 1:05.27. In the 200 breast, she placed sixth in the championship final with a time of 2:19.93, a school record.

In the diving competitions, Mike Greco and Woody Lord put up numbers to compete in the championship final of the one- and three-meter diving, with Whitney Johnson doing the same on the women's side.

UIC takes a short break from competition before returning to the Flames Natatorium on Dec. 17 to face Western Illinois and Saint Louis at 1 p.m. (CT).
