INDIANAPOLIS - In its ongoing effort to recognize student-athletes for their success in the classroom, the Horizon League office announced the members of the Fall Academic Honor Roll Tuesday. Forty-eight UIC student-athletes from 13 sports received the honor.
Candidates for the Horizon League Honor Roll must meet three criteria in order to qualify: 1) participation in at least one of the League's 19 sports during the most recent (or current) season; 2) completion of three semesters (or four quarters, where applicable) as a full-time student at the same member institution; and 3) a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale).
"We're committed to both academic and athletic excellence at UIC, and I'm really proud of our student-athletes for enjoying such success in the classroom the past few semesters," said UIC Director of Athletics Jim Schmidt. "That outstanding academic achievement is a credit to the hard work of so many people, beginning with the student-athletes themselves. Our academic staff, coaches and support areas throughout campus also need to be recognized; they make a lot of sacrifices to help achieve this level of success for our department."
The women's swimming and diving team led the way for the Flames, boasting eight student-athletes that were recognized. The UIC men's tennis team had six student-athletes be honored, followed closely by the men's soccer program, which had five honorees. The Flames' women's track and field squad also saw six student-athletes garner recognition.
Other UIC sports that had at least one student-athlete named to the Academic Honor Roll included baseball (1), women's basketball (2), men's cross country (3), women's cross country (1), softball (4), men's swimming and diving (1), women's tennis (2), men's track and field (3) and volleyball (3).
During the 2010 fall semester, UIC student-athletes compiled a 2.97 cumulative grade-point-average, the second-best mark in UIC Athletics history.
Nine of the Flames' 17 teams recorded a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, including five programs above a 3.2. Individually, 136 student-athletes compiled a GPA of 3.0 or better, more than 40 percent of all student-athletes. A total of 32 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.
