DAYTON, Ohio - The UIC baseball team fell in both games of a doubleheader against the Wright State Raiders on Saturday by scores of 4-0 in seven innings and 10-6.
In the opener, Wright State's Casey Henn tossed a seven-inning complete game while holding UIC (20-18) to just four hits. The Flames were also plagued by three errors which led to four unearned runs in the first two innings of the game. UIC starter
Matt Salemi (4-4) also tossed a complete game, lasting six innings for his team. The junior allowed the four unearned runs on five hits and three walks in the loss.
Alex De LaRosa and Ryan Shober supplied all the offense in game one, combing for all four hits accrued by the Flames.
In the nightcap, the Raiders scored first once again, plating a single run in the bottom of the first inning off UIC starter Matt Heaslip (2-4). The Flames answered quickly this time, however, as the scored in the top of the second inning when Andy Leonard singled to bring Nick Addison home.
In the third inning, Wright State strung out five hits and got the help of a pair of errors by UIC to push across five runs and take a 6-1 lead.
The Raiders offense kept rolling and they extended the lead to eight runs at 10-2 after five innings of play. At that point the Flames began to mount a rally. In the top of the sixth, UIC scored three times to cut the deficit to five, 10-5, but they left the bases loaded. Shober had an RBI double in the inning.
Tim Suminski relieved Heaslip and the southpaw delivered a clutch performance, surrendering just one hit in 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. The sophomore also struck out four Raiders on the afternoon.
The Flames added another run in the eighth when Josh Nevers, who walked earlier in the inning, came around to score on Matt Serna's double down the left field line, making it 10-6. Unfortunately that's as close as UIC would come Saturday.
Serna was 3-for-4 with two RBI in game two Saturday. The senior leads the Flames with 13 multi-hit games this season following his third three-hit effort.
Wright State's Jake Hibberd, one of the top hitters in the Horizon League, also had three hits to go along with three RBI in game two for his team.
The Flames will wrap up the four-game road trip on Sunday with a doubleheader against the Youngstown State Penguins. The Penguins are the only team in the Horizon League that UIC has yet to face in 2011. The first pitch for game one is set for 11 a.m. CT.
