CHICAGO - Matt Serna and Harry Kammholz both recorded multi-hit games, but a three-run third inning by No. 10 Georgia Tech proved too much, as the Yellow Jackets posted a 5-1 win over the UIC baseball team at Les Miller Field Monday afternoon.
For the first time in the three-game series, UIC owned a lead, jumping out to a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third. UIC tallied seven hits, its most in the series, and received a strong pitching performance from Joey Begel, who tossed 7.0 innings and allowed just four earned runs. The Jackets' Buck Farmer was credited with the win, also hurling 7.0 innings and striking out five.
Along with the three runs in the third, Georgia Tech also posted single runs in both the sixth and eighth innings. Brandon Thomas led the offensive charge for the Yellow Jackets, going 4-for-4 with one run scored and a single RBI.
After holding the Jackets scoreless in the top half of the first frame, UIC got things going in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on two hits. Alex De LaRosa tallied a one-out single, followed by Serna's first hit, a grounder that found its way into left field. He advanced to second on an errant throw, as De LaRosa crossed home for the 1-0 lead.
The Flames tallied two more hits in the bottom of the sixth to post another threat. De LaRosa grounded out to start the inning, followed by Jason Ganek and Matt Serna singles. The rally was cut short, however, as Joe Betcher and Jon Ryan were retired in order to end the inning.
UIC will continue its non-conference swing Tuesday, when the Flames head to Evanston to take on Northwestern beginning at 3 p.m. CST. The Flames posted a 6-3 win over the Wildcats at "The Mill" on April 12.
