EVANSTON, Ill. - The UIC women's tennis team concluded day one of the Northwestern Invitational after facing off against No. 65 Louisiana State, No. 12 Northwestern and DePaul. Newcomer Haley Craig (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) shined on the courts, as she tallied a victory for the Flames against LSU in singles play and partnered with Mariya Kovaleva (Almaty, Kazakhstan/School #55) in doubles against DePaul and Northwestern to go 1-1.
The Flames began the day against the Tigers, competing in seven matches. Facing tough competition, Craig claimed a win for UIC when she took on Yvette Vlaar and came out on top 6-4, 6-3.
During doubles play, Craig and Kovaleva defeated the duo of Patricia Fargas and Rebeca Mitrea of DePaul, taking the match 9-8, while they fell to the Northwestern tandem of Kate Turvy and Veronica Corning, 8-1. The UIC pairing of Elisa Simonetti (La Spezia, Italy/Schiller) and Jana Knoppe (Ihringen, Germany/Martin Schongauer Gymnasium) ended the day with Northwestern by claiming their matchup against Nida Hamilton and Natalie Edell, 8-3
The Flames return to action Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (CT) to face LSU in doubles, before going head-to-head with DePaul in singles at 2 p.m. (CT).
