CHICAGO - Junior infielder, Coryn Schmit (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Lake Zurich) has been named to the preseason first-team all-Horizon League squad, while junior pitcher Devin Miller (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) and sophomore infielder Natalie Hernandez (Glendora, Calif./Glendora) garnered second team accolades as announced by College Sports Madness.
Schmit was a postseason first-team all-Horizon League honoree as she had a league-best slugging percentage of .800, while also leading the Flames in homeruns with six. The first baseman logged 16 RBI in 20 League contests, and concluded the season with a .315 batting average. Schmit was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on April 4 following a pair of homeruns against Valparaiso to help her team to a 4-1 victory over the Crusaders.
Hernandez garnered 2011 postseason all-second and all-newcomer Horizon League honors after the shortstop posted a .349 batting average, while committing only four errors on the season. She added nine RBI, three homeruns and a triple during her rookie season. Hernandez was named the Horizon League Player of the Week Feb. 14 after she posted her first-career homerun, and a three-run triple to propel the Flames to a 5-3 victory over UC-Riverside (Feb. 13) at the Sportco Kickof Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.
Miller is the final UIC representative in the preseason awards as the pitcher earned second-team honors. During the 2011 season, Miller posted a 17-18 record, while recording a 2.50 ERA. During an 11-0 victory over Youngstown State (April 9) Miller logged 11 strikeouts.
The Flames begin the 2012 season Fri., Feb. 10 against Santa Clara at the Hotel Encanto Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M.
