Swimming & Diving Defeats Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. - The UIC men's and women's swimming & diving teams came away with a pair of wins as they defeated Western Illinois on Saturday at the Brophy Pool Hall. The men's squad defeated the Leathernecks 207-93 and the women captured a 228-67 win.

The men's team (4-3, 1-1 HL) took first in 13-of-16 events, as Rodolfo Zuniga, Joel Demuth, Brian Sivak, Conor Ozog, Kei Ishimaru, Christian Grobe, Sebastian Ostrowski, Vince Errichiello and Mike Greco each recorded bests.

Zuniga, Demuth, Sivak and Greco took a pair, as Zuniga held his own in the 1000 free (9:57.32) and 500 free (4:56.05), Demuth held first in the 200 free (1:45.84) and 100 free (47.98) and Sivak finished best in the 100 back (52.73) and 200 back (1:56.63). Greco was able to produce an NCAA qualifying score in the 3-mtr dive with a score of 345.60 and came away with a 1-mtr score of 287.55.

Ozog won the 100 breast with 1:00.31, Ishimaru defeated his opponents in the 200 fly with 1:57.51, Grobe came away with the 200 breast in 2:09.74, Ostrowski claimed the 100 fly with 53.20 and Errichiello bested his opponents in the 200 IM in 1:59.97.

Katherine Hare, Melanie Waszak and Whitney Johnson shined for the women's team (4-2, 1-1 HL) as they each collected a pair of firsts. Monica Pinkus, Veronica Gibson, Gisun Pak, Emily Gniatczyk, Anne Jacobsen, Danel Voorhees and Kelsey Millin also represented for the Flames.

Hare came in first in the 100 back with 1;02.84 and 100 free with 54.83, Waszak won the 200 fly with 2:07.31 and 500 free with 5:11.17 and Johnson won both diving events with 265.43 in the 1-mtr and 248.33 in the 3-mtr.

Pinkus' first-place finish in the 200 breast with 2:24.76 set a Brophy Pool record, while Gibson had a best on the season in the 200 free (1:59.17). Pak brought in the 100 breast (1:10.44), Gniatczyk held the 50 free (24.78), Jacobsen won the 200 back (2:14.37), Voorhees came away in the 100 fly (1:00.52) and Millin captured the final individual event in the 200 IM (2:15.65).

The 200 medley relay team of Waszak, Pinkus, Voorhees and Gniatczyk won with a time of 1:49.99 and the 200 free relay team of Gniatczyk, Hare, Kirsten Hutchinson and Waszak concluded the meet with first in 1:40.13.

The Flames break for the remainder of the year and return for their annual training trip from Jan. 1-10 in Honolulu. They return to competition on Saturday, Jan. 12 for a meet against conference-foe Green Bay at 1 p.m. (CT) at the Flames Natatorium.
