CHICAGO - Senior Ashley Hewett led UIC to a 6-1 victory over Northern Illinois Thursday at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill., to improve the Flames' series record with the Huskies to 26-21.

"It was great to get the win tonight," head coach Michelle Venturella said. "We need to gain some momentum heading into this weekend. It was good to take the lead right after they scored. Ashley (Hewett) did a nice job in the circle, and Kara (Komp) made some things happen for us. She had a great catch in left field, and she continues to put the ball in play, while putting pressure on the defense. It was good to see all of the parts of our game come together."

With Hewett's win, she improves her overall record to 8-10. The senior threw five strikeouts in five innings of work and allowed only one hit.

The Huskies scored in the top of the third inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead, before UIC answered in the bottom of the third inning with two runs off of four hits. With two outs, junior Melissa Preish, singled to third base, before senior Melinda Macias had a base hit to left field. As Northern Illinois' left fielder attempted to throw Preish out at third, Macias advanced to second base. Sophomore Natalie Hernandez then collected an RBI as she singled to center field. Junior Coryn Schmit then had a hard-hit ball up the middle of the field to score Macias to post a 2-1 lead.

UIC's remaining four runs in the contest happened during the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore Jacki Fletcher hit a stand-up double to left center field, before advancing to third base on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jenna Marsalli walked and then junior Kara Komp cleared the bases with a triple to center field. Komp then scored on the second wild pitch of the inning. The final Flames run of the inning was scored by freshman Breann Warren, who pinch hit in the lineup, and reached on a fielder's choice, and scored off of a ball hit up the middle by Macias.

UIC had nine hits to ignite a 6-1 victory over the Huskies.

UIC returns to conference play Saturday as the Flames take on Valparaiso in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at Flames Field in Chicago, Ill.
