Oct. 7, 2014 CHICAGO - The UIC softball team was recently recognized for its 2013-14 academic success for the third-consecutive season by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The Flames received the All-Academic Team honor, while six current and three former players were named All-America Scholar Athletes.
UIC combined for a 3.185 grade-point average and was one of 98 teams to accumulate a team GPA greater than 3.0, as fellow Horizon League members Youngstown State, Cleveland State and Valparaiso were also represented on the list.
Current student-athletes Bridget Boyle, Erica Hampton, Elaine Heflin, Rachel May, Savannah Soppet and Laura Swan collected individual scholar athlete honors, as well as 2014 alums Jacki Fletcher, Natalie Hernandez and Jenna Marsalli. Boyle, Hampton, Swan and Fletcher earned the accolade for the second time in their careers after obtaining scholar athlete status for 2012-13.
Student-athletes who maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher during the 2013-14 academic year qualified for the award. In total, the NFCA honored 1,096 Division I student-athletes and 4,660 across seven membership divisions.
