GREEN BAY— The UIC swimming and diving program traveled to Green Bay and defeated the Phoenix in both the men's and women's competition. The men won with a final score of 155-145 and women won by a score of 162-134.
"With finals finishing up this week and having to commute back-and-forth in the same day for the meet, we knew we had some cards stacked against us to compete," said head coach Tim Loeffler. "The team fought through every race and we're happy with the outcome. We're looking forward now to the next few weeks to getting back to the grind."
The women's squad collected eight individual swim victories paced by sophomore Brianna Hines and freshman Lexie Joy, who each grabbed three wins. Hines touched first in the 1000 free (10:27.31), 500 free (5:03.95), 400 IM (4:27.58). Joy earned her trio of victories in the 200 free (1:52.75), 100 free (52.05), and 50 free (24.37) In the 50 free led by Joy, the Flames finished one-two-three with Daniela Cabrera finishing second and Katherine Hare touching third.
Senior Veronica Gibson posted a time of 2:07.40 for first place in the 200 fly and finished second in the 1000 free (10:41.94). Sophomore Sophia Shalabi touched first in the 200 breast (2:24.70) and second in the 100 breast (1:06.74).
On the boards, the Flames finished one-two-three in the one-meter dive with sophomore Rachel Criscione scoring a 238.65 and teammates sophomore Katy Knight placing second (221.70) and freshman Natalie Williams coming in third (186.60). Criscione would also finish first in the three-meter dive (245.25).
The Flames' men also earned eight total individual swim victories. Senior Christian Grobe earned two wins coming in the 200 breast (2:06.90) and 400 IM (4:11.09). Junior Nick Kowaleski also grabbed a pair of victories in the 100 free (47.03) and 200 free (1:43.96). Senior Kei Ishimaru touched first in the 200 fly (1:53.18) and 100 fly (50.91). Sophomore Tanner Alms led the 1000 free with a time of 9:55.92 and freshman Connor Homans earned the top spot in the 50 free (21.69).
In the three-meter dive freshman Sean Scarry placed second with a score of 290.55 and junior Tyler Pastore finished third with a score of 267.70. Pastore would also finish second in the one-meter dive (288.45).
The Flames will be back in action on Jan. 15 when they travel to Cleveland to take on Horizon League foe Cleveland State.
