INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman Karissa Frazier has garnered Horizon League Pitcher of the Week honors for the period of Feb. 16-22, the conference office announced on Monday. Frazier picks up her second accolade just three weeks into the season after going 1-1 for the Flames at the SCU Bronco Classic (Feb. 20-22).
"Karissa had another strong weekend in the circle, which was good for our team," said head coach Michelle Venturella. "We talk a lot about consistency and how we need to be solid on the mound. We need to challenge our pitchers to be better because of the level of competition in the Horizon League, but she is off to a good start."
UIC went 1-3 at the tournament in Santa Clara, Calif., as it claimed a 2-1 win against Santa Clara and fell to San Jose State, 7-0 and 4-3 (8), and Idaho State, 5-3.
Frazier, a native of Temecula, Calif., started in game one against SJSU and pitched four innings, struck out three batters, allowed eight hits and had three earned runs.
On Saturday, the freshman came back to pitch the complete game against Santa Clara and collect her third win of the season. Against the Broncos, she allowed just one hit and fanned five batters with no earned runs.
Frazier went a total of 11 innings on the mound, during which time she registered eight strikeouts, walked six batters and gave up nine hits. She produced a 1.91 ERA after gaining three earned runs and now owns a 1.25 average on the season.
Next up for the Flames is a trip to Florida, where they will compete in the USF Under Armour Invitational (Feb. 27-March 1) in Clearwater, Fla. UIC is set to take on Rhode Island, Sacred Heart, Villanova, USF and Maine.
