BOX SCORE
CHICAGO - The UIC baseball team (2-8-1) plated three runs in the ninth frame against Chicago State(3-11) on Wednesday, but could not overcome a four-run lead as the Flames ultimately fell 7-6 in the home-opening contest. Four UIC players posted multiple hits as redshirt freshman David Cronin highlighted the afternoon with a game-high three RBI.
Chicago State struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning as the Cougars ripped three consecutive hits to start the frame.
UIC answered with three scores in the fourth inning as a single up the middle by senior Jeff Boehm began the spurt. Boehm was later sent home by sophomore Cody Bohanek with a single. Cronin gave UIC a 3-2 lead with his first career triple that plated Bohanek and sophomore Ricardo Ramirez.
After a scoreless fifth frame, Chicago State put up three runs in the top of the sixth inning to jump in front 5-3. CSU added two more in the eighth to extend their lead out to 7-3.
The Flames kicked off a near-ninth inning comeback with a Ramirez walk and a single to right center from Bohanek. Cronin sent Bohanek to third and scored Ramirez on a double down the right field line, his first collegiate two-bagger. Bohanek was then sent home after pinch-hitter Carl Sugihara grounded out to shortstop. After a single by junior DH Trevor Lane, redshirt junior Conor Philbin scored Cronin on a single to center field which made the count 7-6 in favor of Chicago State. Detmer was then walked and CSU changed out pitchers for Boehm. The slugger made good contact but flied out to center field for the final out.
The Flames return to action this weekend as they prepare for Horizon League play against Valparaiso. The three-game set will begin on Friday at 4 p.m. CT at Granderson Stadium.
