ORLANDO, Fla. - The UIC softball team (6-9) suffered losses in its first two games of the UCF Spring Fling Tournament on Friday at the UCF Softball Complex. The Flames were shutout by Butler, 5-0, in its first game and came up short against rv James Madison, 6-1, to conclude the day.
UIC came up with 10 hits through the two games, while its opponents combined for 22. Senior Amanda Mener was a perfect 2-for-2 after coming in as a pinch hitter and freshman Taylor Cairns produced two hits in her five at-bats.
Butler 5, UIC 0 Box Score
UIC was held without a run while Butler put five on the board while outhitting the Flames 9-6. Six different players contributed to UIC's hit total, while the Bulldogs had three players produce multi-hit efforts.
Butler brought two across the plate in the top of the third. After loading the bases on a fielder's choice, single to right and intentional walk, Chelsea Norwood doubled to left field allowing a pair of runners to round the bases and give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Freshman Tiana Mack-Miller and junior Laura Swan were left on base after picking up doubles in the second and fourth, respectively. Junior Dana Capocci singled in the fifth, with senior Eleni Polites coming in to pinch run, but she was called out stealing second.
The Flames made an attempt at a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Cairns led off with an infield single and after one out, Mener came in to pinch hit and picked up an infield single of her own. Both runners advanced a base on a groundout to first, but were left in scoring position with the final out.
Butler added three runs to its total in its final plate appearance in the seventh. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases before Alex Kotter stepped to the plate and brought all three runners across the dish with a double to left center.
Senior Erica Hampton singled to left in the seventh, but it was the final ball UIC would connect with in the game.
Junior Bridget Boyle pitched the complete game, walking three and striking out two in a 118 pitch performance. Kristin Gutierrez went the complete seven as well, striking out seven Flames along the way.
James Madison 6, UIC 1 Box Score
James Madison came out swinging in its first round at bat to take a 4-0 lead over UIC and eventually claim the win. The Flames were held off base in five innings and had four hits to the Dukes' 13, with Polites, Cairns, sophomore Kaleigh Nagle and Mener connecting for UIC.
James Madison put four runs in its first round at bat. With a runner at second and one out, Megan Good hit an RBI single to right center and advanced to second on the throw. Jailyn Ford then singled and advanced to second to set up Hannah Hayes, who hit a two RBI single to left center. Hayes eventually made her way to third and scored while the Flames attempted a run-down at first base.
The Dukes added another tally in the third. After placing runners at first and second, Morgan Tolle doubled to left field allowing one runner to cross the plate.
UIC plated its lone run of the day in the fifth. Hampton reached on an error to lead off the inning and Cairns reached on a bunt single before Nagle came up with a base hit to load the bases with one out. Mener then pinch hit and singled, scoring sophomore Savannah Soppet, who was in as a pinch runner.
In the sixth, James Madison scored its final run when Erica Field doubled and Good, who went 4-for-4, followed with a single to bring in the runner from second.
Sophomore Elaine Heflin went all six innings on the mound, struck out four and walked two. Good took the win for the Dukes with eight strikeouts.
The Flames will return to the UCF Softball Complex on Saturday to face Fairfield at 2:30 p.m. CT and No. 20 UCF at 7 p.m.
