INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Eleni Polites and junior Bridget Boyle have been named the Horizon League Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the period of March 9-15, the conference office announced on Monday. Polites earns her first-career accolade and Boyle garners her second after leading the Flames at the UCF Spring Fling Tournament (March 13-15).
UIC produced a 2-3 mark at the three-day tournament in Orland, Fla. The Flames picked up wins against Fairfield, 9-0 (5), and Monmouth, 4-3, while it fell to Butler, 5-0, rv James Madison, 6-1, and No. 20 UCF, 2-1.
Polites, a native of Cary, Ill., boasted a .538 batting average and .769 slugging percentage during competition to be named to the All-Tournament Team. She posted a team-best seven hits and had two three-hit outputs (3-for-4) against Fairfield and Monmouth for the first time in her career. The slapper additionally racked up 10 total bases after hitting her first-career double and triple against James Madison and Monmouth, respectively.
"Eleni was a spark for us this weekend," head coach Michelle Venturella said. "She came into the weekend looking for her opportunities and capitalized on every one."
Boyle, a native of St. John, Ind., appeared in three games for UIC and pitched complete games against Butler and Fairfield while receiving the start against Monmouth. She collected her third win of the season with a shutout against Fairfield while giving up just one hit in five innings. The Flame thrower went a combined 15 innings, struck out six batters, held the opposition to a .203 batting average and tabbed an ERA of 2.33, with zero earned runs while on the mound against Fairfield and Monmouth.
"Bridget has done a great job of being consistent for us on the mound this year and it shows," said Venturella. "She does a great job of playing the game one pitch at a time. We are excited about this for her."
The Flames return to competition this weekend as they host Oakland at Flames Field to open the Horizon League season. Game one is set for Friday at 3 p.m. CT followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
