March 23, 2015

CHICAGO - The UIC softball team (9-12) will make the 182-mile trip to Indianapolis, Ind., on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against IUPUI (16-7). First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT at the IUPUI Softball Complex.

The Flames are coming off a 1-2 result in their Horizon League series with Oakland (March 20-21). UIC picked up a 9-1 (5) win in game two, while it dropped 8-5 (11) and 4-3 results to the Golden Grizzlies. Laura Swan, Eleni Polites and Paige Peterson hit .333 during the series, each grabbing a double and Peterson adding her first-career grand slam. Elaine Heflin pitched in all three games and posted a 1.62 ERA with nine strikeouts.

Polites (.386), Peterson (.310) and Taylor Cairns (.305) top the Flames' offense and own at least 17 hits apiece. Peterson has produced a team-high two home runs, 13 RBI and 10 runs, as Tiana Mack-Miller (.292) holds the most hits (19) and doubles (6).

Each having appeared in 12 games with eight starts, Boyle is 3-3 on the season and Heflin has a 2-7 mark.

IUPUI, under the direction of UIC Hall of Famer Amanda Rivera, prepares to host UIC and Butler over the next two days after opening its 11-game homestand with Summit League play against South Dakota State (March 21-22). The Jaguars fell in game one, 7-5, before responding with 7-1 and 2-1 victories. During the tournament season, IUPUI went 14-4.

Ali Mosier leads the Jaguars offensively with a .356 batting average, 26 hits, nine doubles, 21 runs, 53 total bases and 13 stolen bases. Roni Patterson (.299) holds the home run and RBI categories with eight and 20, respectively. Collectively, IUPUI has 59 extra base hits on the season, including 26 homers.

Emili Escamilla (1.67 ERA) and Brooke Boetjer (2.09 ERA) have compiled all of the starts for the Jaguars. Escamilla is 5-1 after pitching 63 innings with 63 strikeouts, while Boetjer is 11-6 with four shutouts and 68 strikeouts in 90.1 innings with an opponent batting average of .198.
