INDIANAPOLIS - The UIC softball team (10-13) split action with IUPUI (17-8) on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at the IUPUI Softball Field. The Flames held on for a 3-2 victory in game one before the Jaguars came out to take game two, 6-4.
Senior Eleni Polites combined for three hits on the day with a .600 batting average and two RBI, as senior Amanda Mener also tabbed three hits. UIC totaled 16 hits, with three doubles and one triple, and held IUPUI to 11.
Sophomore Elaine Heflin, redshirt-sophomore Lindsay Melson and junior Bridget Boyle controlled the mound for UIC, with Melson getting her first win of the season in her first appearance and Boyle earning her first save of the year.
UIC 3, IUPUI 2 Box Score
UIC jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead after its turn at bat in the fourth inning and held IUPUI to two runs the remainder of the game to clinch the win. The Flames grabbed seven hits in the game, with freshman Taylor Cairns securing the eventual game-winning RBI, and held the Jaguars to just two hits.
Heflin earned the start in the circle and went three innings without giving up a single hit or run and struck out five batters. Melson entered at the start of the bottom of the fourth and allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of work while striking out two. Boyle closed the game after coming in with bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth and gave up one hit in the final 2.2 innings.
In the first frame, UIC went up 1-0 after Cairns led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Polites and scored on a play that presented a single for freshman Tiana Mack-Miller and a fielding error on IUPUI.
After a scoreless second and third, the Flames produced two more runs in the fourth. UIC put two on after sophomore Kaleigh Nagle kicked off the inning with a double and senior Paige Peterson was walked. Senior Erica Hampton singled to score Nagle before Cairns grounded out with the bases loaded and Peterson came across the dish.
IUPUI scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth after the Flames committed three errors to bring in the runner. Another run came in for the Jaguars in the fifth as Roni Patterson was walked with the bases loaded.
IUPUI 6, UIC 4 Box Score
UIC led IUPUI for the second time but was unable to hold off the Jaguars as they scored three runs in the first and three in the fifth to pull away. Polites and Mener each went 2-for-3, with Polites (2), junior Laura Swan and Mack-Miller earning the Flames' RBI.
Boyle started on the mound and went three innings with two strikeouts and three earned runs before Heflin finished the game, struck out three and allowed just two hits with three earned runs.
UIC maintained a 1-0 lead after its first round at bat after Polites reached on an IUPUI error and rounded the bases as Mack-Miller hit her seventh double of the season.
The Jaguars built up three runs in the bottom of the first when Eryn Dillon doubled with two on to score the pair and Taylor Chitwood hit a bunt single to plate the runner at third.
The Flames brought the score within one in the third when Cairns led off with her second triple of the season and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Polites.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth for IUPUI, Ashley Ousley and Mordan Schlobohm each collected RBI singles and Sarah Lawrence walked in a run.
In the top of the seventh, UIC tried to make its comeback. Hampton collected her first extra-base hit of the year with a double and junior Dana Capocci came in to pinch hit and singled to advance sophomore Savannah Soppet, who was in to pinch run, to third. With two outs, Polites singled down the left field line, bringing in Soppet, and Swan followed with a single to allow the final run.
The Flames return to Chicago to host Green Bay in a three-game Horizon League series at Flames Field. A 3 p.m. CT start is scheduled for Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
