NILES, Ohio -- The UIC baseball team (11-10-1, 7-2 HL) completed the series sweep against Youngstown State (5-15, 1-8 HL) with a doubleheader victory on Sunday afternoon at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio. The Flames claimed a 7-2 win to start the day, followed by a 9-0 triumph in the finale. UIC has now won five straight games and owns a 9-2 record in its last 11 outings.
For the series, UIC outscored the Penguins by a margin of 18-3. The last time the Flames swept YSU in three-game road series was during the 2007 season.
With a 7-2 conference mark, the Flames are in sole possession of second place in the Horizon League standings, closely trailing Wright State with a 7-1 record.
Sophomore Mickey McDonald posted five RBI on the day as he went 4-for-10 from the dish. Sophomore Cody Bohanek, the reigning conference Batter of the Week, hit 3-for-7 and recorded four runs.
Game One Recap:
Junior Ian Lewandowski improved to 2-2 on the season as he tossed seven effective innings, scattering eight hits and allowing two earned runs.
After both teams plated a lone run in the opening frame, UIC took control with four scores in the top of the third. The first five Flames' batters reached base and a bases-loaded walk from redshirt senior Alex Lee plated Bohanek for the first run of the inning. McDonald sent seniors Jeff Boehm and Tyler Detmer across the dish with a two-RBI single to right field and then sophomore Ricardo Ramirez executed a sac bunt to score Lee.
The Penguins tallied its second and final run in the bottom of the third inning to cut UIC's lead down to 5-2.
The Flames responded with a pair of scores in the top of the fourth frame to cement the 7-2 final count. Bohanek kicked off the inning with a single to center field and Detmer and Boehm followed with back-to-back walks. Lee plated Bohanek off a RBI-sac fly and then McDonald recorded his third RBI of the game after a groundout plated Detmer.
Detmer recorded two hits in Sunday's opening contest which extended his nation-leading reached-base streak to 43 games, however the impressive run ended in the series finale.
Game Two Recap:
The 9-0 finale victory stands as UIC's second shutout of the season and as many in the last four games. The Flames scored in six of the nine innings, including a three-run seventh frame to put the game away.
Junior Jack Andersen gave up a mere three hits during seven scoreless innings of work as he improves to 3-2 on the season.
Bohanek, McDonald and redshirt freshman Gabe Dwyer tallied two RBI apiece as McDonald went 3-for-5 from the dish. Bohanek fronts six UIC players that own a season batting average of .300 or higher with a team-leading mark of .359.
Dywer recorded his two RBI in the second inning with a double to left center field, plating the first scores of the affair. Single runs in the third and fifth inning gave UIC a 4-0 lead and then three more runs in the seventh put the Flames ahead 7-0.
In the eighth frame, Bohanek slapped a single to center field that plated Dwyer and redshirt freshman David Cronin.
The Flames tacked on lone runs in the final two stanzas to firm up the 9-0 triumph.
