BOX SCORE
CHICAGO -- The UIC baseball team (16-13-1) held an early lead at Northern Illinois (14-21) on Tuesday afternoon, but the Huskies scored 10 unanswered runs during the middle six innings to pull out an 11-4 midweek victory.
Sophomore Cody Bohanek led the way with two hits and two RBI, while freshman Rob Calabrese and senior Carl Sugihara went 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.
UIC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame after senior Jeff Boehm plated Sugihara off an RBI-groundout.
The Huskies knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first stanza, but UIC took the lead back with a lone run in the top of the second. Sugihara sent redshirt freshman Tyler Murphy across the dish with a single to right field. Murphy made his second collegiate start against Northern Illinois and recorded his first career run and base on balls.
NIU took advantage of several Flames' miscues in the bottom of the second inning and scored a pair of runs to grab hold of a 3-2 lead. The Huskies went on to plate eight more runs and held an 11-2 edge after seven innings.
The Flames posted two runs in the top of the ninth inning as redshirt freshman David Cronin began the frame with a double down the right field line. Sophomore Ricardo Ramirez pushed Cronin to third with a single and then Bohanek later drove in both runners with a one-baser to right field.
UIC returns to action on Wednesday as they host Big Ten member Northwestern at 6 p.m. CT.
