CHICAGO -- The UIC softball team (10-14, 1-2 HL) will get back to Horizon League competition when it heads to Detroit, Mich., for a three-game series against the Titans (2-25, 0-3 HL) at Buysse Park. Originally scheduled for 2 p.m. CT, the series opener will get underway at 11 a.m. on Friday, with a doubleheader slated for Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Flames are back in action after falling in a non-conference game to Loyola, 12-2, on Wednesday (April 1). UIC was held to five hits while it committed five errors to aid in the Ramblers victory.
Eleni Polites (.385), Amanda Mener (.382), Taylor Cairns (.304) and Paige Peterson (.302) sit atop the Flames' leaderboard on offense. Tiana Mack-Miller (.293) boasts a team-best 22 hits and seven doubles, while Peterson leads in home runs (2) and RBI (13).
Elaine Heflin (3.86 ERA) has started 10 games ahead of Bridget Boyle's (3.37 ERA) nine while pitching the most innings (61.2) and garnering the most strikeouts (36). Boyle is 3-4 on the season, as Heflin is 2-8. The pitching staff has combined for 96 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .258 average.
It has been a busy week for Detroit, as it competed in a doubleheader at Bowling Green on Tuesday (March 31) and a doubleheader against Central Michigan on Wednesday (April 1), with all four games coming as losses. The Titans have played one conference series this season against Youngstown State, who bested Detroit in the three games.
Kayla Kostich has taken over the Titans' offense with a .310 average, 22 hits, seven home runs and 13 RBI, as Savanna Ferstle follows closely behind with a .306 average and 19 hits. Additionally, Alex Astorga is leading the conference with 15 stolen bases.
On the mound, Hannah Leppek (5.91 ERA), Christa McGahuey (6.10 ERA) and Dayton Yingling (6.20 ERA) have pitched the majority of Detroit's 161.2 innings, during which time they have struck out 109 and allowed an opposing batting average of .324.
In the all-time series, the Flames hold a commanding 56-5 record against the Titans. UIC won the series last season, 2-1.
