CHICAGO -- The UIC baseball team (19-16-1, 14-5 HL) cruised past Milwaukee on Friday evening (23-14, 9-9 HL) in an 8-2 series-opening victory at Curtis Granderson Stadium. Trailing 2-1 after four innings, the Flames scored 10 unanswered runs, capping the surge with four scores in the seventh frame.
UIC starter Jake Dahlberg picked up his league-leading fourth complete game of the year and improved his season record to 6-2. He gave up a mere five hits and two earned runs, lowering his season ERA to 2.37.
The Flames out-hit the Panthers by a total of 13-5 as four separate UIC players recorded multi-hit efforts. Seniors Jeff Boehm, Alex Lee and redshirt junior Conor Philbin posted two RBI each. Boehm also blasted a two-RBI homer in the seventh inning, his seventh round-tripper of the season, and continues to pace the conference in RBI with 45.
UIC jumped in front with an early 1-0 in the opening frame after senior Tyler Detmer was able to trot home off a fielding error by the UWM second baseman. The Panthers were plagued by five errors on the day.
Milwaukee countered with lone scores in the second and third frames to go ahead 2-1.
The Panther's 2-1 lead held true until the bottom of the fifth inning when UIC knotted the count at 2-2 as Detmer drove in redshirt senior Zenon Kolakowski off a single to left field.
UIC captured the lead for good (4-2) in the sixth stanza with a pair of runs as Lee plated sophomore Mickey McDonald with his seventh double of the season and freshman Rob Calabrese sent in Lee off a one-baser.
After Boehm went yard in the seventh frame and UIC tacked on four additional runs, the Flames had extended their lead out to 11-2, putting the game out of reach for the Panthers.
Saturday's contest has been moved to Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 11 a.m. CT.
