INDIANAPOLIS - For the second-consecutive week, sophomore Elaine Heflin has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the period of April 20-26, the conference office announced on Monday. The honor mark Heflin's second of the year and fifth for the Flames' pitching staff.
"We talk about how consistency wins and Elaine has been consistent for us the last few weeks, which is great to see," head coach Michelle Venturella said. "She continues to work to get better each time she takes the mound and continues to compete no matter who we are facing."
UIC went 2-2 during last week's competition, with a 6-5 nonconference loss at Bradley on Tuesday (April 21) and a 2-1 series win at Wright State (April 24-26). The Flames split their doubleheader against the Raiders with a 7-1 win and 7-6 loss before taking the finale, 3-2.
Heflin appeared in all four games while making two starts. She combined for a 1.38 ERA in 20.1 innings and earned a mere four runs as she struck out 22, walked three and held opponents to a .240 batting average. Her 22 strikeouts increased her season total to 99, which leads the Horizon League.
The Downers Grove, Ill., native made her first appearance in relief at Bradley, where she went 3.1 innings, gave up three hits, earned one run and struck out five.
Heflin was dominant in the Wright State series as she kept batters to a .242 average, established a 1.24 ERA and struck out 17 in 17 innings of work. She threw a pair of complete games, marking 12 this season, and took the wins, improving to 10-9 with nine conference victories, while allowing a mere three runs with 11 hits and no walks.
The Flames head into their final nonconference game on Wednesday as they make the short trip to DeKalb, Ill., to face Northern Illinois at 5 p.m. CT.
