CHICAGO - The UIC softball team (13-14, 4-2 HL) will play its first set of games at Flames Field this season as it hosts Green Bay (11-14, 4-2 HL) in a Horizon League doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. CT. The Flames will then head up to Evanston, Ill., on Wednesday for a single game against Northwestern (20-11) at 4 p.m.
UIC is coming off a three-game sweep of Detroit on the road this past weekend (April 3-4). The Flames claimed game one, 5-4, game two, 7-2, and the series finale, 11-6, to improve their conference record to 4-2. Tiana Mack-Miller led all players with a .700 batting average, seven hits, three doubles and seven RBI.
Topping UIC's offense for the fourth-straight week is Eleni Polites, who owns a .385 batting average and is one of four with 20-plus hits, followed by Mack-Miller (.341) and Amanda Mener (.333). Mack-Miller has come away with the most hits (29), doubles (10) and RBI (18), while LaRi Mitchell (13) and Polites (6) have posted more than half of the Flames' 26 stolen bases.
Bridget Boyle (3.11 ERA) and Elaine Heflin (3.99 ERA) have controlled the circle for UIC this season as they each own four wins with 10 and 12 starts, respectively. While each pitching more than 60 innings, Boyle (36) and Heflin (49) have made key contributions to the Flames' strikeout total of 118 and have held opponents to a .259 batting average.
Green Bay comes to Chicago after hosting its last five games, including a three-game set against Cleveland State (April 3-4) where it went 2-1. In addition to the series win against the Vikings, the Phoenix additionally won two out of three against Valparaiso to open conference play.
The Green Bay offense has been aided this season by Hailey Mohrfeld (.368), Abby Brinkmeier (.346), Katelyn Huemmer (.329) and Miranda Spangberg (.310). Mohrfeld boasts a team-high 32 hits, three triples, seven stolen bases and is tied with Huemmer for 16 RBI, as the Phoenix have collectively produced 31 doubles and 23 home runs.
Heather Sanderson (4.27 ERA) and Briana Cavin (4.36 ERA) have combined to start 20-of-25 games while tallying respective records of 4-4 and 3-8, as Hailey McDermott (3.23 ERA) and Katie Rossman (7.67 ERA) make up the final four wins with two each. The pitching staff has struck out 107, led by Sanderson (56) and Cavin (38), while opponents have come in bat an average of .306.
UIC possesses a 58-20 record against Green Bay in the all-time series. Last season, the Flames fell in all three games of their series with the Phoenix, who went on to win the Horizon League Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Northwestern caps off a six-game homestand with UIC on Wednesday after pulling away with two wins against Wisconsin and a series sweep versus Purdue. The Wildcats have won 13 of their last 14 games and hold a current RPI of 27 while they received votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll.
Seven players are hitting over .300 for Northwestern, with Andrea DiPrima (.441) and Andrea Filler (.409) above the .400 mark. DiPrima owns 41 hits, eight doubles, eight home runs and 28 RBI, while Filler has produced 11 doubles and 38 RBI off 38 hits. Sabrina Rabin (.385) leads the hit total with 42 and owns a team-high 15 stolen bases.
Kristen Wood (3.31 ERA) and Amy Letourneau (4.60 ERA) have shared the starts for the Wildcats while tallying records of 9-3 and 11-8, respectively. The pair has struck out a combined 241 and allowed opposing batters to hold a .234 average.
Northwestern owns a 30-10 advantage in the all-time series with UIC, as the Wildcats came away with a 14-7 win last season while ranked 24.
