CHICAGO -- The UIC baseball team (21-20-1, 16-8 HL) dropped its first Horizon League series of the season on Sunday afternoon as the Flames fell, 7-1, in a rubber match against Wright State (32-13, 16-7 HL) at Nischwitz Stadium. With the victory, WSU inched past UIC in the Horizon League standings and own a one-half game lead on the Flames for first place.
Sophomore Cody Bohanek was the lone UIC player to record multiple hits as he went 3-for-4 from the dish. Senior Jeff Boehm went 1-for-2 today and hit 5-for-10 during the three games. Bohanek and Boehm front the squad with a .342 season batting average.
UIC plated its first and only run of the afternoon in the top of the eighth inning as sophomore Mickey McDonald tallied a bases loaded walk that sent in redshirt freshman David Cronin. McDonald led the team with four RBI during the weekend series.
The Raiders took hold of the lead in the fourth inning with a lone run after three scoreless frames for both teams. WSU extended its advantage to 5-0 with four runs in the fifth inning and then cemented the final count of 7-1 with a pair of scores in the bottom of the eighth.
Junior Trevor Lane (4-3) started on the mound for UIC and was charged with the loss. He tossed 4.2 innings and gave up three hits and five earned runs.
The Flames return to the field on Tuesday evening as they host Big Ten-member Michigan with first pitch set for 6 p.m. CT. Michigan will be making its first-ever visit to UIC on Tuesday, however the Flames own a 4-3 all-time series record against the Wolverines.
