ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The UIC baseball team (25-20-1, 19-8 HL) picked up a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon and earned a series sweep against Oakland (10-34, 5-21 HL) as the Flames scored 38 runs and belted eight homers over the weekend.
The Flames are now back in first place in the Horizon League standings with a 19-8 record. Wright State occupied the top spot before losing to Milwaukee today in their series finale. WSU sits one-half game behind UIC with an 18-8 HL record.
Senior Jeff Boehm led the way with five home runs, 10 RBI and a batting average of .667 in the three-game set, while senior Tyler Detmer went yard three times and hit .563. Boehm also slugged 2.083 with an on-base percentage of .750. Along with Boehm and Detmer, four other UIC players hit above .417 during the series including, Mickey McDonald (.500), Rob Calabrese (.500), Alex Lee (.455) and Conor Philbin (.417).
Boehm now owns 13 homers on the year which puts him tied-for-third on UIC's all-time single-season leaderboard. His 58 RBI ranks him eighth on the Flames' single-season list. The Lansing, Ill. native has 20 career dingers with the Flames in just two seasons, tying him for ninth on UIC's all-time top-10 list.
As a team, the Flames hit .357 and totaled an on-base percentage of .471 against the Golden Grizzlies. UIC has now won four straight games and have claimed victory in eight of its nine Horizon League series' this season.
Game Two Recap
Game two began on Friday afternoon and was suspended due to rain in the seventh inning as UIC held a 7-6 lead. Play resumed on Saturday morning with Flames scoring four answered runs to pull out the 11-6 win.
Oakland built a 5-1 lead after two innings by scoring two runs in the first and then three more second. Philbin gave UIC its first score of the game with a RBI-single in the bottom of the second frame.
The two teams traded solo homers in the third inning from Detmer and Ian Yetsko, making the OU advantage 6-2.
A RBI sac-fly from Zenon Kolakowski in the fourth inning cut Oakland's lead down to 6-3 before UIC took a 7-6 advantage with four scores in the top of the fifth frame. Detmer cracked another solo shot to begin the surge and then Calabrese and redshirt freshman David Cronin recorded RBI-singles to plate Philbin and Lee, respectively. Calabrese later scored off a wild pitch. After three quick fly outs by Oakland in the bottom of the sixth inning, play was suspended until the following morning.
Boehm started the day on Saturday with his third long ball of the weekend, a solo blast to center field. He would homer once again in the top of the ninth inning with a two-RBI knock.
Sophomore Mitchell Schulewitz (1-2) earned his first win of the season after coming in for relief in the fifth inning and throwing five scoreless and hitless frames.
Game Three Recap
After a scoreless opening frame, the Flames took hold the lead with a RBI-single from Lee in the second inning.
UIC went ahead 6-0 with five spot in the fourth inning as they also recorded five hits. Boehm, Lee and Cronin posted RBI-doubles and Philbin singled to plate Boehm. Cronin also scored off a throwing error by the catcher.
Boehm cracked his fifth and final homer of the weekend in the fifth inning that also plated Detmer. UIC scored two more times in the frame after McDonald crossed home plate off a wild pitch and Philbin was driven in on a double play groundout.
The scoring continued for UIC in the next two innings with a pair of runs in each frame. McDonald ripped a two-RBI single in the sixth and Detmer tallied a two-run jack in the seventh.
Oakland executed a scoring surge of their own in the bottom of the eighth frame, plating five runs and cutting UIC's lead down to 14-6, which proved to be the final score.
Junior Trevor Lane (5-3) was credited with the win after tossing six frames and allowing a mere one earned run. He struck out seven OU batters and gave up six hits.
