July 20, 2015 The 2015-16 academic year begins in 35 days and UICFlames.com counts down the Top 25 Flames over the summer months (June 8-July 31). Each sport will be featured over eight weeks as we preview the upcoming year in UIC Athletics. In this installment of 'Top 25 Flames for 2015-16', we feature men's soccer junior goalkeeper
Andrew Putna. He owns 23 wins and a stellar 0.97 goals-against-average over his first two seasons after he competed in all of UIC's 37 matches to amass upwards of 3400 minutes in goal.
Putna has made 118 saves and recorded 16 shutouts as a Flame. He already ranks second in program history in shutouts (16) and fourth in wins (23).
As a freshman, Putna was named the 2013 Horizon League Freshman and Goalkeeper of the Year and placed on the All-League First Team and All-Freshman Team. He helped lead the Flames to their winningest regular season in program history, an unblemished conference record (7-0-0) and the Horizon League Regular Season Championship.
The Lemont, Ill., native went 16-4-0 to tie the program record for most wins in a single season and tallied 10 shutouts to tie for second most in a single season. He allowed a mere 16 goals for a 0.79 goals-against-average, a mark that placed fourth among previous keepers, and made 52 saves.
Putna came back to start all 17 matches as a sophomore in 2014. He produced six shutouts, including three consecutive, and collected seven wins in goal. He set a career high in saves with seven on four occasions and made a career-high 66 stops on the year. He picked up his first ever assist and point on the game-winning goal against DePaul on Sept. 20.
