Lisle, Ill. – The Flames are hitting their stride as the outdoor track season continues to roll along. Both the men and women produced some exceptional marks at the Benedictine Relays this past weekend.
In the sprints and jumps,
Shaun Wollenweber,
Martin Hunter, and
Jordan Munar have continued to show that they will be competitors at the conference level. Martin ran the fastest 200 meter at UIC since the team was re-established in 2001 with an impressive 21.38. The highlight of the meet was the men's 4 x 100 meter event. Despite a late hand-off, the relay team of Wollenweber, Munar,
Emmanuel Onoh and Hunter, took second place and broke the school record running the race in 41.21 seconds.
Maciej Markiewicz grabbed third place in the men's 110 meter hurdles (15.00) and 400 meter hurdles (54.22).
Martin Hunter placed fourth in the 200 meter (21.38) and sixth in the 100 meter (10.74) events,
Jordan Munar was fifth (21.50) and eighth (10.77) in the same events.
Michael Crepeau (49.90) posted a fifth place finish in the 400 meter and
Kyle Hauser ran the 800 meter in a time of 1:55.00, also good enough for fifth place.
"Overall I am very pleased with the results," said head coach
Gabe Rivera. "As a team we are really hitting our stride as the conference championships approaches."
Nunez Favio finished second in the men's discus with a throw of 47.30 meters.
Laith Kanan hurled the hammer 50.75 meters, for a fourth place finish.
Shaun Wollenweber (15.14 meters) took second in the triple jump (15.14 m) and long jump (7.04 m) events, while teammate
Nick Barnes (6.75 m) placed sixth in the long jump.
The women also performed well in the 400 meter hurdles, Paige Crawford ran a 1:03.03 to grab second place. The 4 x 400 meter relay team took home third place, the team of Basirat Iginla, Crawford, Sarah Poulos and Mia Cruz-Bastian crossed the finish line in a time of 3:57.23. The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Alimot Lawal, Teagan Hough, Iginla and Ariel Gibbs finished fourth in 48.01 seconds.
In the pole vault, LaTreesha Washington snared second place with a vault of 3.25 meters and in the pit, Ariel Gibbs posted a third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.34 meters followed by teammate Alimot Lawal (4
th, 5.29 meters).
"I was impressed Alimot Lawal's performance in long jump and Paige Crawford in the 400 meter hurdles," said Rivera. "Paige narrowly missed the [school] women's hurdles record (1:02.51)."
The Flames return to the track on Saturday, April 22 at the Illinois Twilight in Champaign, Ill. Events begin at 3:00 p.m.
