The UIC men's gymnastics team scored 366.500 points, their highest total in three meets, Saturday afternoon at Michigan. The hosts scored 417.700 to take the dual win, in the final meet of the regular season.
"All in all it was a pretty good day for the Flames," head coach
Charley Nelson said, noting that several gymnasts set season highs across a number of apparatuses.
Rotation 1 – Floor
- Sam Montague had the team's highest score on the floor with a 13.300. "I was really impressed with Sam Montague, though his scores didn't necessarily reflect the effort," Nelson said of the freshman.
- Satchel Hudson was just shy of the 13 point mark, scoring 12.850. "Satchel was another highlight of the day," Nelson noted.
- Asad Jooma, Matthew Whittington, and James Marden rounded out the Flames' floor lineup.
Rotation 2 – Pommel Horse
- Colin Schwartz finished fifth with a score of 13.650, setting a new season high. "Colin Schwartz had a great day, especially on the pommel horse. His 13.250 score should put him in a great position to qualify for the postseason," Nelson predicted.
- Michael Peluso was right behind him in sixth with 12.200.
- Asad Jooma scored 10.800 as an all-around competitor, so his score did not count toward the team's total. The horse was UIC's lowest team score of the meet.
Rotation 3 – Still Rings
- Hudson's season high 13.200 led the team, outpacing Wes Diveney's 12.600.
- Peluso topped 12 points for the fourth time this season, scoring 12.050.
- The Wolverines put together a strong performance on the rings, outscoring the Flames by 9.4 points.
Rotation 4 – Vault
- Victor Bello remained consistent on the vault as he logged a 13.500.
- Montague and Jooma were right behind him, scoring 13.400 and 13.300 respectively. Montague's score was his season high. "Asad debuted a new vault," Nelson pointed out. "His Kasamatsu with 1.5 twists is on par with the best in the nation and now that he has his jitters out I'm excited to see it in competition again."
- The rest of the lineup, consisting of Tayler Styer and Hudson, were at 13.200 or above as well.
Rotation 5 – Parallel Bars
- Schwartz tied his season high at 12.600.
- Montague set a new season high, scoring 12.550.
- Jooma posted a 12.400, and Colby Lawson scored 12.100.
Rotation 6 – High Bar
- Peluso's score of 12.600 was a season high and good for fifth place.
- AJ Hardin contributed with a 12.150 in the leadoff spot.
- Marden, Jooma, and Montague rounded out the meet with scores at or above 12.000.
All-Around
