UIC Resumes #HLBase Play Against Wright State

Flames and Raiders open set with Saturday Doubleheader

CHICAGO -- UIC will resume Horizon League play with its third conference home series of the season as the Flames welcome Wright State to Granderson Stadium for a three-game series beginning on Saturday, April 7 with a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 12:05 p.m. CT.

The series will conclude on Sunday, April 8 at 12:05 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN3.

PITCHING PROWESS
  • The Flames lead the Horizon League and rank 13th nationally with a 2.90 ERA in 2018. No other team in UIC's conference owns an ERA below 4.20 through seven total weekends of the season.
  • UIC's team ERA through nine conference games - 3.19 - is also the League's best mark.
  • UIC ranked second in the NCAA with an earned-run average of 2.65 in 2017, behind only Oregon State (1.93). It was the best ERA in the program's history by 0.54 points (3.19 in 2003).
  • Last season, the team's WHIP (1.11) & hits allowed per 9.0 innings pitched (7.0) were also second only to Oregon State (0.98; 6.27).
SOUP'S ON
  • Senior Ryan Campbell threw back-to-back complete games for the first time in program history at Georgia Tech (8.0 IP) and against Chicago State (9.0 IP).
  • He is one of only four NCAA pitchers to toss at least two complete games this season.
  • Against Chicago State on March 10, the Carmel, Ind., native earned his first career shutout in a performance that earned his second Horizon League Pitcher of the Week honor of the season.
  • Campbell began the season by throwing 17.0 consecutive scoreless innings. He allowed three runs in the fourth inning of his third start at Georgia Tech and followed that with 16.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
  • Campbell leads the Horizon League in innings pitched (48.2) and his ERA of 1.48 ranks 29th in the entire NCAA.
  • In League play, Campbell owns a 2.55 ERA in three starts and 18 strikeouts in 17.2 IP.
  • Last season, Campbell made 14 of his 16 appearances out of the bullpen for UIC.
GOOSE EGGS
  • UIC ranks 23rd in the NCAA with three shutouts this season. The Flames blanked Southern in the season opener (Feb. 16), Chicago State (March 10) and Northern Kentucky (March 18-1). Ryan Campbell started the first two contests, while Reid Birlingmair opened the NKU game.
  • UCF and Stetson currently lead the NCAA with seven clean sheets in 30 and 29 games, respectively.
  • Only one other Horizon League team, Wright State, has at least one shutout in 2018.
  • The Flames finished third in the country in 2017 behind Oregon State (14) and Long Beach State (12) with 11 shutouts.
CHUCKING IT
  • UIC junior Charlie Cerny was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on March 5. He allowed one hit over 4.0 IP through two scoreless appearances, both in games won by the Flames, against Roosevelt and Georgia Tech.
  • He leads the Flames and is tied for 88th nationally with 14 appearances. Cerny owns a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 10.0 as he has issued only three free passes in 21.1 innings of work.
  • He has a 0.42 ERA, which would rank second nationally with qualifying innings (min. 1 IP per game played; Cerny is 3.2 IP shy).
  • Cerny has made nine consecutive scoreless appearances entering the weekend, stretching his last 13.0 innings of work. The only earned run he allowed this season came on Feb. 16 at New Orleans.
THE WRIGHT STUFF
  • UIC won five of its seven matchups against Wright State in 2017, including the final three in a row, en route to securing the program's fifth NCAA regional appearance.
  • In the regular season, the Flames swept a doubleheader at Granderson Stadium on May 13, winning 5-0 and 6-3.
  • The Raiders and Flames were tied with 21 League wins entering the final day of the regular season (May 20) and UIC won on the road, 5-2, to clinch the regular season championship.
  • The Flames topped WSU twice during the Horizon League Championship at Granderson Stadium and the win on May 27 secured the NCAA Tournament bid.
  • UIC outscored Wright State, 30-17, in the seven games last season. The Flames batted .258 as a team, while the staff held the Raiders to a mark of .218 with a 2.51 ERA.
  • Reid Birlingmair started three of the seven games, winning twice. He struck out 13 Raiders and walked only three in 20.2 IP against WSU in 2017.
