Men's Tennis Outlasts Lamar in Saturday Morning Matchup

The Flames Now Prepare for Incarnate Word

BEAUMONT, Tex. – UIC's men's tennis (8-11, 3-1 Southland) earns a 5-2 win on their two-match trip to Texas. They stopped in Beaumont, Texas to play Lamar (9-9, 1-1 Southland) Saturday, before playing Incarnate Word (11-3, 0-0 Southland) on Sunday.

This is the first time UIC is competing against both teams, but the Flames knew the matchup against the Lamar would be challenging. The Cardinals are also new to the Southland Conference. They previously a member of the Western Athletic Conference, winning the championships last year. Sunday's fall to UIC is Lamar's first conference loss.

  • Miroslav Cvjetan came out strong for the Flames at singles number three, beating Martin Garcia-Ripoll of Lamar 6-2 both sets.
  • Pelle Strandberg fell at position #1, 4-6, 3-6.
  • At positon six, Kevin Kruzel kept pushing UIC along, winning both sets over 6-3 Brandon Do.
  • At singles #5, Ammar Wazir came up short 3-6, 3-6.
  • Aleksa Bucan came out of a tiebreaker as a winner over Filippo Salsini. At singles number two, the score came to 6-3, 6-7, 3-7, 6-2.
  • Gustavo Schwebel finished out strong for the Flames at position #4. He came back after losing the first set to defeat Joan Crespo 3-6, 6-2, 7-6, 10-8 in a tiebreaker.

UP NEXT
The Flames will turn around and play another match in less than 24 hours. They head south, thorough Houston to matchup against Incarnate Word in San Antonio on Sunday. First serve against Incarnate Word is set for 1 p.m. from the Mabry Tennis Center.
