Women’s Golf Heading to Colorado for Golfweek Red Sky Classic

UIC looking to continue its momentum following record setting performance last week

CHICAGO (Sept. 24, 2023) – Following its record-setting performance at the Brittany Kelly Classic, the UIC women's golf program is back in action Monday through Wednesday at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic in Wolcott, Colo.
 
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
  • The three-day event will take place at the Red Sky Golf Club on the Par 72, 6,305 yard Fazio Course.
  • This will be the 13th year the classic has taken place. 16 teams are set to compete in this year's tournament.
  • The Flames will be joined by Arkansas State, Ball State, Boise State, Central Arkansas, East Tennessee State, High Point, Kennesaw State, Little Rock, Mercer, Murray State, New Mexico State, Pepperdine, South Dakota State, UNCG and Wofford.
  • First-round action starts at 10 a.m. MT Monday. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat here.
  • The Red Sky Golf Club is situated more than 8,000 feet above sea level and is consistently ranked as one of the best public-access courses in Colorado.
BRITTANY KELLY CLASSIC RECAP
  • The Flames opened the 2023 fall season on a high note as Dasa Urbankova (Brno, Czech Republic/Menlo College) set the program record for lowest round under par, shooting a -4 (68) en route to claiming the individual title at the second annual Brittany Kelly Classic.
  • The Flames finished in second place in the team standings, shooting +25 (889).UIC's second place finish was the Flames' best team finish since placing second at the Braun Intercollegiate last October.
  • The Flames' 54 hole team score of 889 is the second-lowest in program history.
  • The team's Tuesday combined round score of 290 is the third-lowest round in program history.
  • Megan Tang (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's) also placed in the top three in the individual standings, finishing with a +2 (218) across the three round event.
  • For their efforts on the course, both Urbankova and Tang were named to the All-Tournament Team.
  • The Brittany Kelly Classic was Angela Rayhill's first as head coach of the UIC women's golf program. 
  • Junior Lia Thomas (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) hit a hole in one on the thirteenth hole during Monday's round. It is believed to be the first hole in one in UIC history.
DASA'S DOMINANCE
  • For her efforts on the course, the Missouri Valley Conference named Urbankova its Golfer of the Week on Sept. 21.
  • The victory was Urbankova's first individual title at UIC. She is the seventh UIC golfer to capture an individual title and the first Flames golfer to win an individual title since Megan Tang won the Briar Ridge Invitational in Sept. 2022.
  • Urbankova's three day total of 211 broke her own program record by three strokes for lowest 54 hole total.
  • Her second round score of 69 Monday is tied for the second-lowest round in program history.
2023 FALL SCHEDULE
  • The Flames are scheduled to compete in five events throughout the 2023 fall season.
  • Following its trip to Colorado, UIC will travel to Indianapolis for the Butler Fall Invitational (Oct. 2-3).
  • The program will then head to Libertyville, Ill. for its only competition in the state of Illinois this fall. The team will compete at the Loyola Parkinson Invitational from Oct. 9-10.
  • UIC concludes its fall portion of the schedule Oct. 16-17 at the Chippewa Invitational in Birmingham, Mich.
  • UIC has already participated at the Brittany Kelly Classic in Muncie, Ind.
ANGELA RAYHILL ERA STARTS AT UIC
  • Angela Rayhill was named UIC's women's golf head coach in July. She is the third head coach in program history.
  • Rayhill comes to UIC from Chicago State, where she has led the Cougars' women's golf program since 2015.
  • During her more than eight seasons at the helm at Chicago State, Rayhill led the Cougars to multiple top-five finishes at the PGA Works Collegiate Championships (formerly the PGA Minority Championship), including a second-place finish in 2016 and a third-place finish in in 2017.
  • Prior to her arrival at CSU in February 2015, she was an assistant women's golf coach at Chicago's North Park University during the 2012-13 school year and was a former assistant golf professional at the Midlothian Country Club in Midlothian, Ill. 
A NEW HOME FOR THE FLAMES
  • Harborside International Golf Center, one of the preeminent public golf courses in Illinois, became the home of the UIC women's golf program at the start of the 2023-24 season. 
  • Harborside is home to two challenging links courses; the Port Course and the Starboard Course. The Port Court has been named as Chicago's top public course while the Starboard Course provides a similar links golf experience to its sister course and was named a Top 10 Public Course in Illinois by Golfweek in 2022.
  • Harborside's practice facility was recognized by the Golf Range Association of America (GRAA) as a Top 50 Public Range in 2022.
