Softball Falls in Back-to-Back Close Games at Easton Classic

Flames drop one-run contests to Southern Utah and Pacific Friday

FULLERTON, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2024) – The UIC softball team opened its season Friday, falling in closely contested games against Southern Utah (3-2) and Pacific (7-6) in the first day at Cal State Fullerton's Easton Classic.

GAME ONE (3-2, SUU)
  • Graduate Student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./Southern Illinois) earned the first start of the season for the Flames. In the first two innings, Clark collected a pair of strikeouts and held the Thunderbirds to zero hits through the first six batters she faced.
  • After Southern Utah took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third, the Flames tied the score in the bottom half of the inning after Clark smacked a ball to the outfield grass to score freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./ St. Anthony) all the way from second base.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) hit a line drive to right field, hustling around first to make it to second base on a double. She later scored in the inning on an error by Southern Utah to give the Flames the 2-1 lead.
  • Clark finished her outing after a single from Southern Utah's Alayah Toscano scored two to give the Thunderbirds a 3-2 lead after five innings. She completed her day allowing seven hits, striking out three and not walking a single batter.
  • Redshirt junior Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) entered the circle in relief for the Flames, pitching two innings and only allowing three hits. Although McIntosh kept the Thunderbirds at bay, the Flames couldn't find offensive momentum, resulting in a close defeat.
GAME TWO (7-6, UOP)
  • The Flames caught fire in the top of the first with three RBIs off the bats of Villa, junior Larissa Ortiz (Romeoville, Ill./Wisconsin) and freshman Siena Stickney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capo Valley) to push UIC to an early 3-0 lead.
  • Graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) opened her season pitching a complete game, striking out six and only walking two batters through six innings in the circle.
  • Clark collected her second RBI of the day in the top of the sixth inning when she singled down the left field line, scoring Rios from third base. The Flames found themselves trailing entering the seventh inning, 7-4.
  • Junior Emma Gumont (Warren, Ohio/Notre Dame) opened the seventh inning with a base hit to center field. That was soon followed by a double down the line by Ortiz to give the Flames two runners in scoring position with one out in the top of the seventh.
  • The Flames brought the score to within one after junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Milikan) connected a ball in between two Pacific outfielders to score Gumont and Ortiz with a triple. Down by one with a runner 60 feet away from home, the Flames had an opportunity to tie the game. However, the Tigers secured the third and final out of the inning to come away with the victory.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Four members on the Flames finished the day with multiple hits: Clark, Fleming, Gumont and Villa. Nine Flames collected at least one hit across day one of the Easton Classic.
  • Though seeing limited time in the batter's box, Clark finished the day batting .500, going two-for-four with a team-leading two RBI.
  • 56 opponent batters faced the pitching trio of Clark, McIntosh and Toniolo throughout Friday, with only three walks being issued.
