Women’s Tennis Wins Home Opener Against Milwaukee

The Flames defeated the Panthers 5-2 Friday afternoon at the XS Tennis Village

CHICAGO (Feb. 9, 2024) – Behind a solid effort in both doubles and singles competition, the UIC women's tennis team (2-2) cruised to a 5-2 victory over Milwaukee (3-2) in the Flames' home opener at the XS Tennis Village.

The victory was UIC's 11th in a row against Milwaukee and the 24th in the Flames' last 25 contests against the Panthers. Friday's contest was the 50th all-time meeting between the two programs. COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH ELIZABETH LUMPKIN ROBINSON

  • The Flames clinched the doubles point behind a dominant win from UIC's No. 3 pair of Zara Ryan (Dublin, Ireland/Utah State) and Paula Rodriguez Gregoris (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands/International School of Berne) and a victory by the UIC's No. 1 tandem of Agnes Gustafsson (Paris, France/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and Mayu Ushio (Yamaguchi, Japan/Miami University). Friday's doubles match was Rodriguez Gregoris' first action of the 2024 season.
  • In singles competition, Gustafsson made quick work of her opponent, winning in straight sets. With the win the senior moves to 3-1 on the season at No. 1 singles.
  • At No. 3 singles, Ushio moved to 3-1 on the year following a straight set victory over her Panthers counterpart.
  • After winning an exciting first set, Anaïs Brion (Neuilly Sur Seine, France/Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) won her second set at No. 6 singles to secure her second singles victory of the year and a match victory for the Flames. The sophomore has clinched team victories for the Flames in both of their wins this season.
  • With the team match already decided, Camille Belberka (Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg, France Seward County Community College (Kan.) won her No. 4 singles contest in three sets to give UIC its fifth team point of the afternoon.

UP NEXT
  • The Flames host Miami University Saturday in their second contest of the weekend.
  • The match will start at 1 p.m. at XS Tennis Village.
  • Saturday's competition will be the first contest between the two programs in UIC's storied women's tennis history.
  • Heading into Friday, the RedHawks sport a 3-5 record on the season. Miami lost to DePaul 4-3 Friday afternoon. All three of Miami's victories in 2024 have been 7-0 shutout wins.
  • Saturday's contest will match Mayu Ushio against her former program. Ushio played at Miami (Ohio) for two seasons (2021-23) and was the recipient of the 2023 Mid-American Conference Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award.
