Women’s Tennis Drops Conference Match at Illinois State

The Flames won the doubles point and a match at No. 6 singles in Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Redbirds

NORMAL, Ill. (March 29, 2024) – Playing in very windy conditions Saturday afternoon, the UIC women's tennis program (6-10, 2-1 MVC) dropped its first Missouri Valley Conference contest of the season, as the Flames fell 5-2 to Illinois State (11-6, 2-1 MVC) at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts.

The Flames won the doubles point and at the No. 6 singles position in Saturday's loss to the Redbirds.
COMMENT FROM HEAD COACH ELIZABETH LUMPKIN ROBINSON

"We played an extremely tough doubles point but weren't able to out-compete our opponents from Illinois State in singles competition. Our student-athletes did not play their best matches but they were fighting to try different plans all the way through today's match. The environment and windy conditions gave us a good experience playing in difficult weather as we transition to more outdoor tennis matches."

MATCH RECAP
  • The Flames won the doubles point for their third match in a row. UIC's No. 1 doubles pair of Agnes Gustafsson (Paris, France/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) and Mayu Ushio (Yamaguchi, Japan/Miami University) and the No. 2 doubles team of Tamara Malazonia (Birmingham, United Kingdom/St. Paul's School for Girls) and Camille Belberka (Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg, France Seward County Community College (Kan.) both won their matches 6-4.
  • In singles competition, Anaïs Brion (Neuilly Sur Seine, France/Texas A&M - Corpus Christi) won her match at No. 6 singles in straight sets. The sophomore has won the last three singles matches she has competed in and has six singles victories in 2024.
  • Illinois State would win the other five singles matches to clinch the overall match.
  • Outside of a three-set match at No. 2 singles, the other five singles matches between the Flames and Redbirds were decided in straight sets.
