Softball Falls in Series Opener to Indiana State Friday

Flames snap three-game winning streak as they drop to 7-8 in Missouri Valley Conference play

CHICAGO (April 12, 2024) – The UIC softball team (14-26, 7-8 MVC) couldn't fend off an early offensive surge from Indiana State (16-20, 5-7 MVC), Friday night at Flames Field in a late-night Missouri Valley Conference match-up, 7-3.

Senior Emma Crowley (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) batted 2-for-3, crushing her second home run of the season. Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) went 1-for-2 in the batter's box with a sacrifice fly. Graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) pitched 4.2 innings in relief, striking out one batter, allowing five hits. She also collected a double in the batter's box, finishing the game going 1-for-3.

GAME RECAP
  • Situational hitting from the Sycamores got them out to 3-0 lead before Crowley collected the first hit in the game for the Flames. She connected on a 2-1 pitch in the bottom of the third to hit the ball up the middle for a single before she was left stranded.
  • After Indiana State added three insurance runs in the top of the fourth, the Flames began to build offensive momentum. In the bottom frame, freshmen Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) led off with a bunt just out of reach of the Sycamores' pitcher Lauren Sackett. She then moved to scoring position behind a double off the bat of Clark before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Villa to cut into Indiana State's lead, 6-1.
  • Once the Sycamores added another run in the top of the fifth off of an RBI double, red shirt freshmen Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) opened the bottom frame getting to second base on a dropped fly ball from Indiana State's Danielle Henning. Crowley came up to bat next, and on a 1-2 pitch crushed the ball over the left-center wall for a two-run homerun to bring UIC within four at 7-3.
  • A pair of Sycamore runners got on early with one out in the bottom of sixth, but Clark forced back-to-back ground outs including a nice grab from Rios to complete her first shutout inning in relief.
  • Indiana State secured the win in the later innings, closing out the game with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings for the Flames in the sixth and seventh innings.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • In her second appearance in the circle this week, Clark has held batters to a 1.32 ERA.
  • Casas is capitalizing in the batter's box this week in her second consecutive start at shortstop. She is batting a team-leading .429 batting average, having collected three hits in seven at-bats with an RBI.
  • Crowley now has two homeruns this season, tying junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) for second-most on the team.
  • The Flames have now dropped the past four games to the Sycamores. UIC aims to collect its first win this weekend since 2016.
