Sixth-Inning Uprising Sends Softball Past Indiana State, 4-1

McIntosh throws complete game as Flames return to .500 mark in MVC play

CHICAGO (April 13, 2024) – The UIC softball team (15-26, 8-8 MVC) broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to surge past Indiana State (16-21, 5-8 MVC), 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Flames Field.

Redshirt junior Alyssa McIntosh (Lancaster, Calif./Lancaster) tossed a complete game in the circle, scattering six hits and striking out three in a 101-pitch performance. Redshirt freshman Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) and senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) each recorded two hits and an RBI in the victory.

COMMENT FROM REDSHIRT JUNIOR ALYSSA MCINTOSH
"Today was an awesome team win at home in front of our fans. Emma Crowley was working her butt off behind the plate with me. The bottom of the sixth offensively, Larisa Villa came through with the double, Jazmyn Casas with a bunt and everyone else followed suit. Everybody just did their jobs and we got it done."

GAME RECAP
  • Indiana State's Abi Chipps started off the top of the first with a single to left field before she was thrown out trying to steal by senior catcher Emma Crowley (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame).
  • UIC got on the board in the bottom of the first when Villa roped a single to right that scored freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) for the early 1-0- lead.
  • ISU put two runners in scoring position in the fourth before McIntosh's second strikeout of the inning thwarted the visitors' momentum.
  • Two scoreless innings were disrupted by a Sycamore solo home run to tie it up entering the bottom of the sixth.
  • Villa led off the home half of the frame with a double to left. Casas then laid down a bunt that was overthrown to first base, scoring pinch-running freshman Siena Stickney (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capo Valley) from second base with the go-ahead run.
  • UIC added two more insurance runs later in the sixth, first when junior Grace Fleming's (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) single to center plated Casas. Junior Jojo Santiago (Channahon, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) then delivered a perfectly placed bunt down the first base line for a single to score senior Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw).
  • McIntosh secured the win for the Flames in the seventh with a strikeout, followed by back-to-back lineouts.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • The Flames snap a four-game losing streak to the Sycamores, collecting their first win over Indiana State since 2016.
  • UIC picks up its eighth MVC win of the season, its most in conference play since going 10-15 in 2022, the Flames' final season in the Horizon League.
  • McIntosh recorded her first complete game of the season and the fifth of her UIC career.
  • Casas leads the team with a .556 batting average this week, including two multi-hit games.
