Softball Drops Sunday Series Finale at UNI, 6-0

Flames leave nine runners on base in Sunday's loss

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (April 21, 2024) – The UIC softball team (16-29, 9-11 MVC) had back-to-back bases loaded opportunities in the later innings, but failed to capitalize, as the team fell 6-0 to UNI (24-15, 12-5 MVC), Sunday afternoon at the Robinson-Dresser Sports Complex.

Graduate student Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) pitched the complete game, scattering four hits, striking out four and walking four batters. In the batter's box, she went 1-for-3 with a base hit to start off the game. Redshirt freshman Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft) beat out a bunt for a single to finish the day going 1-for-3. Graduate student Alannah Cran (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) drew two walks, leading the Flames with a team total of five in the game.

GAME RECAP
  • UNI scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third off a sacrifice fly.
  • In the fifth, the Flames looked for an opportunity to tie the game after loading the bases. However, the Panthers managed to get out of the inning unscathed to keep the score at 1-0.
  • UNI added five insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • In the sixth, UIC had another bases loaded opportunity, but back-to-back fly outs left the trio stranded.
  • After the Flames quickly got out of the bottom of the sixth with a 1-2-3 inning, the Panthers claimed the victory with a 1-2-3 inning of their own.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • With a 9-11 conference record, the Flames are in sixth in the MVC standings.
  • Clark has extended her hitting streak to nine games, dating back to the Flames' 2-1 extra innings victory against Valparaiso on April 9.
  • Since being penciled in as the starting shortstop on April 10, Casas has batted a team-leading .429, collecting six RBI. She's had  nine hits over the past seven games.
