SOUTH BEND, Ind. (April 24, 2024) – The UIC softball team (16-30, 9-11 MVC) went toe-to-toe against Notre Dame (25-20, 8-13 ACC) in a non-conference pitcher's duel Wednesday night, coming up short in a 1-0 battle at Melissa Cook Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
Graduate student
Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) pitched the first five innings, scattering four hits while allowing just the lone run and adding one strikeout. Classmate
Carlee Jo Clark (Carol Stream, Ill./St. Francis/Southern Illinois) pitched one inning in relief, only allowing one hit against the four batters she faced. Senior
Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw) and junior
Emma Gumont (Warren, Ohio/Champion/Notre Dame College) each crushed doubles to the gaps for UIC's lone hits of the game.
GAME RECAP
- Notre Dame had runners on the corners with one out in the second when freshman Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony) fielded a hard ground ball and tagged the baserunner at third attempting to get back, stopping the scoring threat.
- Gumont collected UIC's first hit of the game in the top of the fourth, blasting a two-out double to center field, but she ended up stranded on second.
- The Fighting Irish loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth before Notre Dame's Emily Tran hit a ground ball to redshirt freshman shortstop Jazmyn Casas (Berwyn, Ill./Taft). Casas alertly threw to senior catcher Emma Crowley (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) to cut down the runner at home just in time to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
- Walker connected on a 1-0 pitch to the right-center gap for a one-out double in the top of the fifth before she was left on base to end the frame.
- Notre Dame finally took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth via a sacrifice fly before holding UIC to one baserunner in the final two innings to secure the win.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- Gumont's double was the first of her UIC career.
- Walker has collected a hit in six of the past nine games she has played
- After her five-inning performance in the circle, Toniolo has pitched a team-leading 122 innings this season.
