Softball Falls in Opening Round of MVC Championship to Murray State

The Flames fall to Racers in a 10-2 contest Wednesday morning

NORMAL, Ill. (May, 8 2024) – The No. 8 UIC softball program went hit-for-hit against No. 9 Murray State, but fell 10-2 in the Wednesday morning matchup in the opening round of the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference Softball Championship.

Graduate student Christina Toniolo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing nine hits, walking six batters and striking out three. Senior Larisa Villa (La Habra, Calif./La Habra) went 3-for-4 with three singles, while junior Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) collected a pair of singles. Senior Anna Walker (Burnside, Ill./Warsaw) and junior Larissa Ortiz (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville/Wisconsin) each had RBI singles for the Flames.

GAME RECAP
  • After the Racers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, the Flames scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second off the bat of a pinch-hitting Ortiz. The junior crushed a ball out to left field on a 1-1 pitch, scoring junior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) from second base.
  • After Murray State added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the third, the Flames brought the score to 4-2 in the bottom half of the frame, after a Walker singled scored Villa from third.
  • The Racers secured the win in the later innings, scoring six unanswered runs across the final three innings.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • After her three-hit performance, Villa finished her season with a team-leading 48 hits.
  • Walker finished her collegiate career with an RBI in five of her last six games.
  • Toniolo fished her UIC career with 603.3 innings pitched, the sixth-most in program history.
 
The Flames finished the 2024 season with a 19-35 record. UIC won four MVC series in 2024 and its 12 conference victories were five more than the 2023 season.
