Softball Victorious over Northwestern State behind a Jasmine Whorley One-Hit Shutout

Whorley leads the Flames in the circle to collect her second win in her young collegiate career.

MOBILE, Ala.  (Feb. 9, 2025) – Behind the work of freshman hurler Jasmine Whorley (Alameda, Calif/Alameda) in the circle, UIC softball (2-3) concluded the South Alabama Invitational presented by Marriott Mobile victorious in a 3-0 victory over Northwestern State (0-5) Sunday afternoon.
 
Whorley pitched the complete game, striking out two, drawing a pair of walks and allowing only one hit in a 101-pitch performance. Freshman Trinity Brandhorst (Pacific, Mo./Pacific) collect a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first, finishing the day at the plate going one-for-three. Senior Hailey Cowing (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) collected an RBI double in the next inning, going one-for-two in the win.

TOURNAMENT SHOUT OUTS
 
  • Whorley became the first UIC pitcher since 2022 to throw a shutout the opening weekend of the softball season. Last opening weekend shutout came from recent UIC alumni Carlee Jo Clark (2022-24) pitched a 1-0 shutout against Cal Poly at the San Diego State Tournament in Feb. 11, 2022.
  • Whorley finished the weekend sporting a 2-1 record in the circle, pitching a team-leading 17 innings in Mobile. She struck out five batters and only allowed eight hits.
  • Freshman Nina Pesare (Lisle, Ill./ Benet Academy) led the Flames in Mobile with five hits over five games, batting .333 after the first weekend of the season. Senior Grace Fleming (Long Beach, Calif./ Millikan) collected a team-leading seven RBI in Mobile.
  • 14 Flames connected with the ball to earn a hit during the Invitational. Five of those Flames collected multiple hits: Pesare (5), Cowing (4), Fleming (2), sophomore Cameran Rios (Effingham, Ill./St. Anthony's) and Brandhorst.

The Flames travel to Northern California to take part in the Silicon Valley Classic I, hosted by San Jose State and Santa Clara University.
