Chicago, Ill. - UIC setter Erica Anderson broke the school career record for assists on Tuesday night as the Flames grinded out a 8-15, 15-10, 15-6, 15-10 victory over Valparaiso at the UIC Pavilion.
The senior from Burbank, Ill., set up junior Lynn Clarkson for a kill in the fourth game for career assist No. 3,554, snapping the old mark held by former Flame Carlyn Fisk, who graduated in 1991. Anderson finished the night with a match-high 49 helpers and now owns 3,562 assists for her career.
"She has done it in three years, which is special," remarked Head Coach Don August of Anderson, who transferred to UIC from Missouri-Kansas City following her freshman year. "She is a model of consistency. Day in and day out she just gets it done. It's a great tribute to an outstanding person. She's really earned this. You couldn't do any better."
Anderson's record-breaking night proved to be one of the few highlights for the Flames, who battled all night to keep the upset minded Crusaders (2-16) at bay.
"We weren't playing very smoothly tonight and we just had to find a way to win," stated August. "I thought our defense turned things up in games two, three and four. It was just one where we had to struggle for it and luckily were able to tough one out.
The Flames defensive effort was by junior Vicki Lublow, who led the squad with a match-high 26 digs and a pair of blocks. Lublow also totaled 17 kills in the win for her third double-double of the season. Freshmen Lindsey Filkins (14 kills, 15 digs) and Teaha Shepperd (18 kills, 14 digs) both recorded double-double outings for the Flames as well, while freshman Gina Caneva, who filled in for the ill Jill Greer for the second-straight match, posted a season-high eight kills.
Dion Frazier, who registered 12 kills and 18 digs on the night while Sarah Slowik chipped in 10 kills and 18 digs in the loss, led Valparaiso.
With the win, UIC remained undefeated at UIC Pavilion this season (6-0) and improved to 11-2 on the year. The Flames return to MCC play on Friday night as they take on UW-Green Bay at the Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
