Final Stats
Chicago, Ill. - If it wasn't for bad luck, the University of Illinois at Chicago volleyball team would have no luck at all.
For the seventh time this season, UIC dropped a five-game decision at the hands of Wright State on Friday night at the Physical Education Building. The Raiders came away with a 30-32, 30-24, 25-30, 30-28, 15-11 victory to give the Flames' their sixth five-game loss in Horizon League play this season.
With the loss, UIC drops to 12-13 overall and 3-8 in Horizon League play, while Wright State improves to 19-5 overall and 10-2 in the league.
Sophomore outside hitter Teaha Shepperd (Kalamazoo, Mich./Galesburg-Augusta) led the way for the Flames with 17 kills, 13 digs and eight block assists.
Senior middle hitter Lynn Clarkson (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) also recorded the second-most block assists in UIC history with 10 on Friday night. She also combined for the second-most total blocks in Flames' history with 12 total blocks against the Raiders. Clarkson was also effective offensively as she put away a season-high, 15 kills.
The Flames also received solid efforts from senior outside hitter Vicki Lublow (Elgin, Ill./Elgin-Larkin) as she pounded home 12 kills and collected 19 digs, while teammate Lindsey Filkins (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) garnered 13 kills and 18 digs. Freshman setter Dawn Strahanoski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) dished out a career-high 57 assists on Friday night.
It seemed from the outset that Wright State had control of the match as they built a 21-9 lead in the first game. The Raiders, however, quickly lost control as costly errors let the Flames get back into the game.
During this span, Shepperd collected three kills, while teammates Filkins and Lublow each added two kills apiece. Filkins' final kill of the match tied the game up at 27-all. Clarkson then tallied two kills and a block to clinch the 32-30 victory for the Flames.
In game two, the Flames battled valiantly, but could draw no closer than 22-21, as Wright State held on for the 30-24 victory.
The shoe was on the other foot in the third game as UIC was in control of most of the match and the Raiders crept within one point at 22-21, but eventually succumbed and dropped a 30-25 decision to the Flames.
Game four was a see saw affair as UIC was in control for much of the first half of the contest. The Raiders, however, staged a comeback and took a 26-23 lead.
UIC tied it back up at 26 behind a kill from junior middle hitter Gina Caneva (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and a pair of aces from Lublow. Two errors and kills from Tricia Naseman (11 kills, 19 digs) and Andrea Voss (10 kills, 13 digs) ended any thoughts of a UIC comeback.
UIC jumped out to a 6-5 lead in the final game, but five consecutive hitting errors for the Flames proved to be fatal as the Raiders took a 10-6 lead and held on for the 15-11 victory.
Liza Osterhage led the way for Wright State with 17 kills, while teammate Alison Sipiorski added 12 kills.
UIC will be back in action tomorrow as they will host the Butler Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m.
