Dayton, Ohio - The UIC volleyball team (13-12, 6-2) fell to Wright State (11-12, 5-3) in a five games (36-34, 21-30, 30-18, 28-30, 11-15) on Friday night in Dayton, Ohio. Despite the loss, Katie Kozak not only captured first place in the UIC career records book after notching 55 assists against the Raiders, but the senior also recorded her third triple-double this season with ten kills and a team-high 19 digs.
Freshman Katerina Hanackova picked up her first UIC career double-double with a team-high 19 kills and 15 digs against the Raiders. Senior Ambria Springer paced the Flames at the net with five blocks and led the squad with a .379 attack percentage. Katarina Nedeljkovic notched her 13th double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs.
UIC clinched a nailbiting game one, 36-34. UIC jumped out to a 9-3 start early in game one, recording a .600 attack percentage in its first nine points. Wright State battled back to take a one-point lead (18-17), but the Flames fought back and knotted it at 21-21.
On a kill by Kenny and a blocking error on WSU, UIC regained a two-point advantage (23-21) before the Raiders threatened, tying it up at 25-25. The lead changed four times before the Flames grabbed the victory on back-to-back Raider errors.
Holding the Flames to a .125 attack percentage, Wright State dominated offensively in game two, recording a .319 clip. The Raiders led UIC by eight points (16-8) mid-game, capitalizing on the momentum for the 30-21 win.
With the match tied at 1-1, UIC responded with a strong offensive showing in game three. Recording a .475 attack percentage, the Flames notched 22 kills and held the Raiders to nine kills and a .091 clip. Leading 29-18, Nedeljkovic drilled game-point to top Wright State (30-18) in game three.
Tied at 13-13, the Flames earned their third lead in game four. With a 19-18 advantage, UIC posted a 3-1 run, but Wright State answered with six straight points after the Flames lead by one (26-23). With UIC trailing by one (29-28), Wright State's Tara Geegan notched a kill to force the match into a fifth and final game (30-29).
The Raiders captured game five (15-11) after trailing by five points early in the deciding game. UIC jumped out to a 5-0 start, but Wright State inched its way back into the game, tying it at 7-7. Wright State then sparked a 7-3 run to clinch the match victory.
The Flames tangle with Butler on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 3:00 p.m. before heading back to Chicago for their final regular season home matches. UIC battles Cleveland State on Oct. 27, followed by a Senior Day celebration against Youngstown State on Oct. 28.
