Chicago, Ill.- Junior Ben Trotter's four-RBI day paced the UIC baseball team to a sweep of Chicago State in a non-conference doubleheader at Les Miller Field on Tuesday night.
The Flames (26-15) rallied from three runs down to beat the Cougars by a 7-6 score in the first game before blanking Chicago State (4-35) in the nightcap, 5-0.
UIC has now won four games in a row.
Game Two: UIC 5, Chicago State 0
Six UIC pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout, and a five-run third inning proved to be all the Flames needed in a 5-0 victory over Chicago State.
Larry Gempp Jr. led a balanced offensive attack with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate. Gempp had two doubles, an RBI and a run scored.
Mark Hallberg (2-for-4), Bart Babineaux (2-for-4) and Trotter (2-for-2) each drove in a run and scored a run, while Chad Schroeder also had an RBI.
A leadoff walk to Nick Rainwater in the bottom of the third turned into the game's first run after Hallberg tripled to left center. Two consecutive doubles by Gempp and Babineaux plated runs, while an RBI single from Trotter and a sac fly by Schroeder capped the scoring.
Don Phillis pitched a scoreless third to pick up the win.
Game One: UIC 7, Chicago State 6
Bryan Nolte's RBI double drove home the game-winning run, capping a four-run rally to propel UIC to a 7-6 win over the Cougars in Tuesday's opening game.
UIC jumped on the board quickly with three runs in the first, but Chicago State answered back with five runs in the top of the second to chase Phillis and take a 5-3 lead.
The Cougars added another in the third on John Torres' solo shot to extend their advantage to 6-3.
But the Flames prevented the upset with four unanswered scores.
Johnson led off the bottom of the third with a single, moving to second on a Shawn Neubauer's wild pitch and advancing to third on Trotter's groundout. Johnson then scored easily on Neubauer's second wild toss of the frame to cut the deficit to 6-4.
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the fifth, Trotter ripped a double down the left field line to plate two runs and tie the game at 6-6. After Schroeder's groundout advanced Trotter to third, Nolte delivered a two-base hit into right center that scored the deciding run.
Randy Krick picked up his first win in a Flames uniform with four innings of one-hit relief work.
Adam Worthington struck out the side in the final inning to earn his sixth save.
