UIC Volleyball Continues League Winning Streak

Youngstown, Ohio - Despite trailing Youngstown State after three games, the UIC volleyball team captured back-to-back victories to run its Horizon League winning streak to three matches with the 3-2 triumph (30-26, 19-30, 25-30, 30-28, 15-13). Juniors Katarina Nedeljkovic and Amanda Kenny guided the Flames (9-10,3-0), each recording double-doubles against the Penguins.

Kenny notched 12 kills and 17 digs, while Nedeljkovic recorded 17 kills and 14 digs in the 3-2 win. Senior Ambria Springer added 16 kills and guided the Flames at the net with a team-high six blocks versus YSU. Julie Popp led UIC with 24 digs and Katerina Hanackova posted a .467 attack percentage, earning the freshman a match- and team-high.

The Flames held YSU to a .140 attack percentage, while owing a .289 clip in game one. Recording 18 kills, 17 digs and six blocks, UIC handed the Penguins a 30-26 loss for a 1-0 advantage.

Youngstown State (8-11,0-3) bounced back to claim game two (30-19) with steady play on both sides of the net. Youngstown State recorded 25 digs and offensively posted a .255 attack percentage.

With the match tied at 1-1, Youngstown State pulled away from the Flames early in game three. Trailing 24-16, UIC began to inch its way back into the game after the Flames posted four straight to get within five points (25-20). UIC got within striking distance (28-25), but YSU earned the next two points for the 30-25 victory.

In a critical fourth game for the Flames, UIC turned on the heat to take a 6-2 lead over the Penguins. Although YSU made a late run to only trail by one point (29-28), the Flames forced the match into a fifth and final game after Nedeljkovic drilled game-point for the 30-28 win.

Point-for-point late in game five, Youngstown State posted the first four points for an early 4-0 advantage. UIC fired back with four straight to tie it up at 4-4. After exchanging points, eventually knotting the game at 13-13, the Flames capitalized on an YSU error, followed by Springer's 17th kill to clinch the match.

UIC heads to Cleveland State for a 3:00 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Sept. 30 against the Vikings before returning home to host UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee at home next weekend.
