Chicago, Ill. - UIC volleyball (13-12, 5-7) handed Youngstown State a 3-2 loss on Friday night in the "Dig for the Cure" match at the Flames Athletic Center. Junior Christin Hunt owned a team-high 21 kills, while Sophomore Casie Sullivan picked up a team- and career-high 20 digs.
Senior Amanda Kenny owned a team-best .316 attack percentage and added 15 kills and six digs on the night. Senior Liz Hrebic totaled 11 digs and freshman Taylor Szatkowski tabbed 19 digs against the Penguins.
Jessica Fraley paced Youngstown State with 20 kills and Laurie Shives owned a team-high 24 digs.
UIC notched the first five points in game one of the match, but Youngstown State responded with a 4-1 run to get within two points (6-4). UIC then turned on the heat and recorded a 14-7 burst to take a 20-11 lead. The Flames glided to a 30-20 game one victory. Hunt led the offense with seven kills.
Game two was a tight matchup until the Penguins tabbed three straight points late in the frame to take a 27-24 advantage, eventually tying the match at 1-1 (30-26). Heinz paced YSU at the net with a game-high three total blocks.
Momentum continued in Youngstown State's favor after the break as the squad posted a six-point lead at the midpoint of game three (16-10). The Flames then sparked a 4-0 run to get cut the deficit to two points. The Penguins held UIC to a .103 attack percentage to take game three, 30-20.
UIC recorded a 7-1 burst to start game four, but YSU answered back with five straight points. The Flames bounced back and dominated offensively to knot the match for the second time with a 30-19 win in game four.
The fifth and final game remained close until UIC grabbed three straight points at the halfway mark (9-6). YSU rallied late in the game to get within one, but UIC charged ahead and captured the match victory with a 15-12 win in game five.
UIC hosts Cleveland State on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. before taking its last regular-season road trip to Wright State and Butler next weekend.
